iOS Recovery Procedure?

12/03/2014 1:04 PM

My service provider was bought out by another so I was forced to update my iDevices with a new ID because I could no longer activate any applications where the email was automatically sent to the old ID. Now, after a few weeks half of the applications lock up until the password is reset again.

Half of the necessary changes took place but the other half are still tied to the old ID and I can no longer access any iCloud information. Twice, I have been advised to "Log Out of iCloud" and change the password. Twice, I've gotten the same unsuccessful result. I'm not in the mood to try it a third time!

Except for seeing a psychiatrist for my recently split personality ID, does anyone have a suggestion?

I'm sorry, this is probably me, but I'm having trouble understanding the relationship between your wireless provider and your Apple ID. When you say "old ID" and "new ID", am I understanding right that you've created a new Apple ID? Why did you have to create a new Apple ID after your service provider changed? I've never heard of having to do that.

For example, I'm on Verizon, but if I switched to AT&T, nothing on my phone would have to change as far as Apple ID, iCloud account, etc. So if you tell us why you changed this maybe it could help us figure out what's going on. Also, the iPhone type (4S, 5, 5S, 6, etc), iOS version you're currently on, and your carrier past and present might help.

I finally figured out the problem after working with the Apple help desk supervisor. It took a little more than 2 hours on the phone to figure out what was wrong. This will probably be covered in an update in the near future, but so you know I will explain what happened.

First you need to understand that the application "Find my iPad" caused the problem because it is designed to stay online or reconnect any time the device is powered up. This protects it from thieves. Unfortunately, if you need to change your ID, there is no prompt that you must first shut down that application. If you don't you will have to reverse your steps (i.e. change back to your old ID and Password) so that it will allow you to continue. That is to say that the "Find my iPad" prevents changes from being made. Again, it's an anti-theft feature.

If this is not done in the right order, you end up with two ID's that leads people like me down a road that ends up with several applications locked down. I guess that would discourage theft, but it has probably driven thousands of people down a road of pure frustration.

It is actually kind of funny because it is very logical. As a programmer of sorts, I know how logic can work differently than you might expect. Humans frequently think that they are being logical when they are really not being logical.

Spock, where are you when we need you?!!??
