High Temperature Oil Resistant Sealing Material for Metal

12/13/2014 12:51 PM

Hello All,

I wish to know about high temperature (~ more than 250 deg cels) sealing material/ adhesives, which can withstand frequent heating and cooling. The application under consideration is to use the sealing material in between two metal pipes. Outer dia of inner pipe is approx 4mm smaller than the inner dia of outer pipe. The sealing material will be in contact with the engine oil which will be frequently heated to appox~ 250 deg. cels. Pressure of engine oil is of the order of 2 Kg/sq cms.

Thanx in advance

i use these on smaller applications. some engineering required :)

The low-friction, large diameter seals are available in a variety of materials, including polymer-filled PTFE, graphite/glass-filled PTFE and glass-fiber-reinforced PTFE with lubricant, all with an operating range of -450° to +500 °F. Graphite-filled PTFE is available with an operating range of -450° to +475 °F. The PTFE-based seals are available in sizes up to 120 in. ID; thermoplastics, which can be incorporated into backup designs, are available in sizes up to 94 in ID

Applicable Base Polymer Properties

Epoxy-phenolic adhesives are generally used in aerospace applications requiring high shear strength at temperatures in excess of 150°C. Usually the phenolics are a resole-type and often the epoxy is a minor component. These adhesives are relatively brittle and have low peel and impact strengths.

Resulting Properties

The table above shows a starting formulation for a high temperature epoxy phenolic adhesive (paste and solution). It can be formed into a film by casting from a solvent solution. The adhesive can withstand temperatures up to 287°C.

However keep in mind Phenolic epoxy will form a strong bond , which will be difficult to remove.

Rubberbased adhesives don't work at this temperatuer, you may also check some PU based adhesives, Check ITW Philadelphia , www.adhesives.specialchem.com

Don't forget to look into custom-cut automotive industry gaskets, there are bound to be materials available that would be suitable (more suitable I would say than most sealants).

Have you tried your local major automotive parts supplier?

Viton will get you pretty close and I am sure Dupont will also have a high temp adhesive they would recommend:
