  1. Steel or stainless steel for the motor shaft.
  2. Aluminum for the pulley.
  3. Mild steel for the shaft key.

Next question please!

It's difficult to specify materials when you give so little information.

Take a few minutes to describe what you are trying to do.

You can make or buy the pulley with any material you want.

Aluminum is light weight, durable and will lower your rotational force.

Key stock is typically 1018 mild steel, however the key can be made from many different materials and the application usually specifies the material. I.E. in a wet environment, maybe all parts will be stainless steel.

Keys are standardized and in the norm is the material specified!

You ONLY have to make the effort to ask Google and then you get the answer.

It is not difficult and you do not risk to be told what to do.

It can be a number of materials, machined, cast and cast can be made out of difference materials.

As a designer, Machinery's Hand book can help you out. And for a designer it can be looked at as the bible

Or you can check out McMaster and gleam some information off of that.

It could be almost anything, it depends on what you buy or what you make. For example the pulley and/or key could be some polymer or nylon or wood for that matter....

Briggs and Stranton used to use a soft aluminum key on lawn mower engines so the key would shear and the flywheel would spin if you hit something and too abruptly stopped the blade. So, as you see, there are many possibilities depending on application. What is yours? -- JHF
