Simple, restart your system and press del to enter BIOS (read everything-the choices).

Some options down there will prompt you what would you like to boot your system, ex. hard drive, USB drive or CD Drive.

Choose what you like, then go to the fridge and have some bud light.

Seriously, try that one.

You need to re-format the USB drive and select the "boot" or the "copy system files" option when you format the drive. Just copying the files to the drive does not place the needed system files in the boot sector of the drive. The format process can do this. Once done... copy the windows files again and it should be good to go.

If using windows I use power iso to make bootable usb drives.

http://www.sourceforge.net/ Has a free distribution of Unetbootin which will work on linux or windows.

The software creates a bootable usb flash drive.

Any of the cd writer progams make bootable cd's I do this for linux with windows software. I can also make bootable cd's from linux also usb flash drives.

Remember you will need your registration number for windows.

Go to www.portableapps.com and download the program. It will then ask you what other programs you want to add to your list. Get them. There are ones that will allow you to turn your software on your computer into a bootable one. So you can have your whole desktop on the drive. By doing this you will be able to plug in and use someones computer who has an operating software. Your usb will automatically boot up and start to back up what you have told it to, then ask what software you want to use on the usb. You can browse the internet with your own browser, use your favorites, and save more to it. But you will not leave a trace on the computer you have booted up to. You do not load anything on the computer, and then have to delete it later. So you can make a presentation with your computer on their own equipment from your own files. No lugging a lot of things on the road. No trace at all.

My advice is to get a portable 2tb usb like the toshiba, that will allow you room for all of your computer software and files. It is about the size of a credit card and 1/4" thick. The portable part means there is no cord to plug it into an outlet to run it. Draw energy through the usb cable. So all you have to have is the cable it comes with. It is a 3.0 usb that can do 1.0 and 2.0 usb. So with a download on your computer that takes five minutes to download, it can be done in 15 seconds on the usb. It is then easier to copy and paste it to your computer. The best time to get these is the months right before college starts and right after Thanksgiving. A 1tb toshiba goes for $69 and a 2tb goes for $69 at these times, regularly they are $69 and $119.

Another thing for your convenience, is go to www.ninite.com to download other free software you may want. It does not add anything to the software like other download sites. All of the software is set to work with portableapps. Hope this helps.
