Electrical AC/DC Motor Testing

01/07/2015 10:47 AM

How comprehensive a test is required to test electrical AC/DC motors?

It all depends on what you are testing them for. Proper assembly of an already proven design will likely not require much more testing than a successful acceleration test with acceptable currents. A completely new design can go into everything imagined from coil inductance, mechanical dimensions, core heating, etc.

You mean to say acceptance test?

Plug it in. Does the shaft go round and round?

Google "testing electrical motors".

Without any inkling of what you really want, it's hard to teach you these things!

What about tests such as hi-pot, resistance, surge, speed, vibration, noise, etc.?

add electricity, if it spins inthe right direction and draws less than its FLA, you're done

Def of FLA? Spinning in the right direction does not provide any speed - torque information. Am I correct?

If your testing the motor for scrap value, you just need a weight.

You must identify what you will be doing with the motor after testing before you can worry about speed and torque!

It is obvious that you have no knowledge of motors. None.

This is not a tutoring service.

FLA is a VERY common term in motors.

Get some books (available by doing a search for them) and come back when you have at least a smidgen of knowledge.

Until then, you are wasting your, and our, time.

I think #1 covered that quite clearly

Fredski, I like your motto. I had to work hard to get qualified for the Boston Marathon

Running trail races this weekend in the snow and cold temps. May you stay strong and healthy in 2015.

As for testing electrical motors, it is in the motor manufacturing environment that I am interested in testing motor automatically. The tests will be integrated into the manufacturing process.

I forgot earlier the very good suggestion of Hi-Pot testing of the coil windings. As for an automated test of an existing design, I like for a bare minimum performance test, how long it takes to get to a synchronous (AC) or maximum speed (DC) with an induction and servo motor. Since the only inertial mass will be the rotor mass this should be very quick. This will have the advantage of rapid testing but will also maximize performance uncertainties depending on how one measures the rotational speed.

A high quality motor performing a special function will certainly require much more testing of the critical, guaranteed attributes.

No test is required. Unless otherwise specified.

You really need to know what the test would be good for and who wants it.

Take it from there as you will have to specify it!

We have in India I.S:325 for electric motors, this also contains methods for testing of electric motors.

Circuit Breaker are you in Central Arkansas? I know of the motor manufacturing facilities in Fort Smith, Ozark and Clarksville. Are there other motor manufacturing facilities in Arkansas?

KevinS

  • What is your job description at this motor mfg. plant?
  • I'm really not trying to talk down to you but... if you do not know what FLA means and you work in a motor Mfg. plant... I think they need to assign this project to someone else that is more experienced. You should be assigned to that person as a helper to learn everything you can before you try to design and build an automated motor testing fixture.
  • That project is WAY over your head!!!!!

Good luck
