Serial to Serial Converter.

Hi,

What is the purpose of serial to serial converter used in local control panels for electrical automation?

Example:

It could be used as Interface Convertor for direct and back transformation of RS-232 signals into RS-422 signals

Good Answer: that was my guess too.

For the OP RS422 signals can be transmitted over much greater distances, and/or, through much noisier (electrically) environments than RS232.

RS232 to RS422/RS485 conversion for greater distance abilities.

Opto-coupling to reduce risk for the equipment is another common type of serial converter. These keep transients from releasing magic smoke from computers, PXI chassis and sensors.

Another possibility not yet given is baud rate conversion.

(But I suspect the RS232<->RS422 or RS485 is most likely)

Passive devices, which to some might appear to be "serial to serial converters" might be simply for connector gender changing, or wiring as null modem.
