Mind/Brain/Memory Enhancer

07/09/2007 4:28 AM

Hi Guys,

Does anyone of you here knew what's the best drug/pill/vitamins, etc. to enhance our memory?

There are a lot of advertisement nowadays claiming that there drugs can improve the memory.

I'm 26 years old and I'm taking Glutaphos and I dunno if it really improves my memory or just a placebo effect. It made me feel sleepy in the office after taking the tablet. it contains:

Glutamic Acid

Dicalcium Phosphate

Thiamine hydrochloride and

Vitamin B12.

Another TV ads claim that there pill can improve your memory, it contains ginkgo biloba...

Theres also Bee-pollen, essence of a chicken and memo-plus.

I'm not sure if these ads is real or just to get money from the consumers... Please help... I want to improve my memory so that I can easily remember things and learn Nihongo or other languages easily...

We are designed though not to remember everything so that we can forget some "useless or strange" events that happened in our life to keep us sane,

What I want is an oral medicine, I've been to memory-enhancing exercise and techniques but I just want now something to be taken by mouth... while continue having a self-study for languages and other things...

Help me guys...

Yes...but I can't remember...

I'd stick to a good diet with plenty of fruit, veg and oily fish..mmmmmmmmmmmmm

oily fish....

Pills aren't an answer to everything..Take up bridge...that will certainly enhance the memory. You'll soon find you can remember a fuul hand from the night before and where all the key cards were....

You will also become a bridge bore...

So there I was with Q,9 3 of spades on table....The J,K,A had gone...but if I assumed the ten was to my left I could finnesse that, get to dummy run the long diamonds, dicarding the losing clubs...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

What happens when you appear at a London Mouse/Vole party? Do you scare all the little freaks out of their mouse suits?

A variety of things come to mind that thankfully help dull the senses, but to enhance them?

I concur with the above feline that diet is the best route. Plenty of sleep helps but I've found that exercise of both the body (gym) and mind (puzzles, study and bridge if you please) keep the mind developing and working.

The bottom line is that you are what you are and can strive to greater cerebral achievements, but there is no magic potent to spur that along.

"Does anyone of you here knew what's the best drug/pill/vitamins, etc. to enhance our memory?"

Good food/diet instead of drugs/pills/vitamins, etc.

A daily physical exercise routines for the body.

Study, not simply read, good and useful texts to exercise the mind. It has been alleged that the human mind has very much more capacity than is ever used by the majority of the population. Get a copy of the "International Innovation Handbook" and/or the "Oxford Innovation Handbook" and make good use of the information therein.

Just clean water that will keep the blood clean and the organ funcutioning properly is best from what I have read. Staying hydrated keeps toxins from building up that could penentrate the blood brain barriers and harm brain cells.

Question: Would you really trust something that would by pass your natural defences and go to the brain. I mean with accepted parts per billion of contaminates accepted in industry? Not me sorry

Yikes;

Watch out for these "supplements." Memory is a good thing, but a stroke because of the supplement you used is a bad thing.

Ginko Biloba has been shown to improve memory for a while. After 2 weeks the effect wears off and your back to where you started. It also causes cerebral hypertension in most people, especially those with Northern European or African ancestry.

Glutamic Acid works, but your body needs to be able to digest it, and utilize it, the best source is actually food, not a pill. I think avocados is the best source, I could be wrong though.

Dicalcium Phosphate, I have never heard of it. I have been in the Alternative health and nutrition field for 8 years now. Again the best source is probably food.

Thiamine and Vitamin B-12 can't hurt, but beware taking allot doesn't help you anymore than the recommended amount. You can only utilize a certain amount.

Bee pollen, unknown whether it actually does anything for anybody, there are lots of kooky guys in white coats that say it does. I'm not convinced.

Chicken soup, hey I like chicken soup, but for memory I never heard that it would help in that context. Can help with sleep, see below.

Memo prove is probably another form of Ginko and B-12 supplementation.

My truly best suggestion isn't so much taking a drug or vitamin, but having your sleep pattern looked at by a Polysomnographer. A bad memory can be attributed to sleep deprivation.

Questions - Do you snore? Have vivid dreams? Wake up tired? Had un-explained weight gain?

Answer yes to any then you probably need to be treated for the most insidious medical condition known to man, sleep deprivation. Most of my patients at your age ignore the problem, until they find out exactly how nasty this condition is. You're still young enough to avoid Alzheimer's, Schizophrenia, and other forms of mental illness. There is also the issue of Cardio-Pulmonary complications, and Organ weakness. Get checked out.

Other than that, get tested for Adult ADD. A good Psychiatrist can prescribe a stimulant like Adderall, or Ritalin. Just make sure that the test for ADD shows that there is true perceptive deficits, or it won't work either. Believe it or not a small dose of amphetamine, used correctly is safer than the "supplements."

Yes I really am a Witch Doctor. I am an Acupuncturist, Herbalist, and Naturopathic Doctor. I carry the Title's Doctor of Oriental Medicine, Doctor of Natuopathy, and I am recognized as a Hoodoo Herbalist/Shaman. Though I am not a member of the religion "Voodoo" or "Santaria", which is where Hoodoo Herbalism comes from. I studied for four years with a Hoodoo herbalist, and 4 years at an Oriental Medical school. And, yes, I am advocating a pharmaceutical drug approach if the sleep issue is ruled out first, and Attention deficits are shown in testing.

Other than the above, stress reduction, removal of trans-fats, removal of processed sugar (high fructose corn syrup), are good steps too.

There is also the other part, accepting that with age comes pain and wisdom.

I agree, there is much that can be obtained from a full polysomnography. I had undiagnosed sleep apnea, when I was put on a CPAP machine at night I noted great changes in my life. If you have energy or wakefulness problems, see a sleep specialist. You may be reborn just as I was.

Hi,

Being the pessimist that I am... I tried Ginko Bilboa a few years ago. After about 6-8 weeks, I noticed a definite improvement in easily accessing memory functions. Someone could say a number, (Phone #, Address, Account number etc) and I could recall it without even trying to remember it. It supposedly increases blood cell oxygen transfer to the brain and for me it has worked. There was a time when I stopped taking the supplement for about a month (thinking that it couldn,t be working) but I noticed that recalling "things" was becoming increasedly difficult. Needless to say, I started taking it again. I also Heard that mental exercises help ie. Suduko, puzzles etc help "reconnect" brain pathways.(John Tesh Radio Show) There are different doses, 3 a day, 2 a day, (2)3 times a day and my favorite 1 a day. Not that I can't "remember" to take it but it's easier to just take it at the same time daily.

Re: Mind/Brain/Memory Enhancer-here's your answer.

07/10/2007 3:15 PM

First the supplement:

Gingo-has been compared to the effects of Ritalin in terms of increased blood circulation in the brain.

DMAE (Di-Methl-Amino-Ethanol) Modulates Acetylcholine, the most important neurotransmitter for memory.

Methods:Win Wengers book "Discovering the Obvious" 1999. Goto www.winwenger.com check out all the links and study up. Dr.Wenger was a College Prof.(both he and his wife are MENSA members) in addition to forming a think tank to discover the most cutting edge thinking enhancement exercises called "Project Renaissance".

I've found it's most effective to use both Gingo and DMAE. If I had to chose just one I'd go with DMAE. It's also fast acting but start out slow and don't waste your money on the pill form-get Twin Labs liquid DMAE for assimilation. Start out with say 2 drops and work up to the max 10 drops over a couple weeks. Both Gingo and DMAE MUST be taken on an empty stomach.

Hope this helps.

Crossword puzzles, brain teasers etc. As the others say "exercise the brain often" is the best way to stay alert and retain information. I've been doing it for years and I have a memory like an ...umm...eh! ????? You know, that big grey thing with the long funny nose.

Sorry pal, you're both stupid and screwed... Unless you send me your SSN, Visa card number, and security code.

Here's the best thing for your memory:

1. Don't take alcohol or drugs

2. Get a well balanced diet

3. Take a good multi-vitamin supplement every day

4. Lay off the sugar and caffeine

5. Get 8 to 9 hours of sleep each night

And this one's up to you...

6. Take up smoking

After this it's between you, your genes and Mother Nature.

Re: Mind/Brain/Memory Enhancer

Ha! You're all partly right and partly wrong! Your memory is constructed out of tangible elements called neurons, encompassed by glial cells. Your 4 billion neurons run on an electro-chemical process that involves the natural chemicals norepinephrine, seratonin, dopamine, and a few others you can look up. If you get down to the level of your synaptic vessicles, you might be able to discern what might be lacking in your diet, or what might be able to enhance your neuronal efficiency. Just remember there are excitatory and inhibitory neurons, and that they operate in a fashion that modulates the human brain's responses and for good reason. There are certain things you can do to temporarily enhance brain functionality (excite) such as amphetamines, which the US military has experimented with, but there are no silver bullets for becoming the next Einstein through ingesting chemical matter of any sort, natural or otherwise. For every action there is a reaction, and if you over stimulate your brain for too long you will come crashing down hard! I like the advice they gave Flounder in the film Animal House - "I suggest you take up drinking heavily!"

Now can you explain "savants" and their amazing capacity in a limited area.

Or folks, some of whom I know and have known who are using their brain at some high capacity such they can quote chapter, page, and text of any book they have ever read.

Or someone like a close friend who listens to all kinds of technical information and is able to assimilate and synthesize it into new applications. He recently borrowed a copy of the International Innovation Handbook, copied it into a program that read the book into MP3 file to put on a player so he could work while listening to new ideas, etc.

You will likely say he is on the way to a hard crash.

Re: Mind/Brain/Memory Enhancer

Certain people do have amazing abilities when it comes to memory. However, I get the feeling that these are not just biochemical affects, but, rather, caused by brain structure - the lucky bastards!

Almost any chemical you can name that enhances one brain process or another will fall under the category of excito-toxins. A neuron can fire, but it then needs to be cleared before it fires again. Excito-toxins make neurons fire over-and-over-again without the clearing process. A neuron can do this for about 19 times, then it dies. Think about your drug using friends... Chances are those that wind up in mental hospitals are amphetamine takers of one degree or other.

Sorry, he's blown a fuse, and it's not covered by his warranty!

Look, all I was trying to say is that there is no magic way to re-wire the human brain by ingesting some type of chemical (DPV) so that memory is enhanced. That would only work if there was a deficiency to begin with, and that would only get you back to what I would consider "normal" - normal for that individual.

In my psychology days, techniques like overlearning (repetitive Q&A practice of something you wanted to memorize) was as good a way to put something into your long term memory as any. However, as the original question reads, this doesn't qualify. Another technique was to link the item you want to recall to a traumatic event, but who wants to get shot at while the shooter simultaneously shouts out what you want to remember?

I've known my share of savants and "geniuses." Every one of them had/have mental defects equally great. They came from the factory wired like this... Who wants to have a photographic memory if the flip side is thinking that aliens are after you, and you have to keep your food wrapped and hanging in plastic bags in your refrigerator to be safe to eat?

There was something they taught us that made the human brain re-wire the neurons, but I forget what that was...

Vermin, I was responding to the previous comment, not what you said. I agree with what you said 100%, that it takes time for the synaptic vessicles to be filled (reuptake) once again with their chemicals before they can, once again, release their particular chemicals (norephinephrine, etc.) after receiving an electrical excitation from another nerve axon. When enough of these chemicals are released, they in turn stimulate (or inhibit) other neurons. That is the biology of the human nervous system.

I've got to go check on the food in my 'frige' now!

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your replies and comments.

Actually I have such a very good memory when I was in Grade School and High School. I even have a hard time forgetting things I want to forget.

I can remember easily the books I read, the films I watched and all the events.

But as I went to college, my memory deteriorates, maybe it's because I skipped lunch sometimes; or maybe my brain reaches its full capacity; or maybe got the "memory" genes from my mom. My father has an excellent memory and brain so I don't have to blame my father's DNA.

:(

Right now, I want to have the "memory/capacity" I have before because I want to learn other languages like Nihongo or Mandarin.

I do have a self study of those languages online and it seems my brain won't catch up easily with what I am studying.

Thank you very much. so have to learn it the hard way, repetion, memorization, burn the midnight candle and more effort.

All the best,

Yul

Good luck! If you really want to ensure you have maximum norepinephrine, you can try L-Tyrosine if it is still available OTC, the chemical precursor. Just don't over-do it. When I experimented with it after a while I had difficulty sleeping.

Memory:

Thanks to Booze & Broads, and living the sinful life mine will never be what it once was. I have a memory of remembering absolutely everything. Thanks be to God in her greater wisdom that it ain't so any more.

In the process of exploring this body, mind, and most of the systems that make up the mind in general I can agree with the naturalist approach and say it works. Healthy diets do in fact work. Pills of any kind, two many of them can kill you. Sleep deprivation of course is detrimental and the effects are strenuous to overcome. Your mind body connection is as real as you want to make it.

Just do you want you mind to do? Why do you not practice and try and try till you get it right? With effort you can accomplish just almost anything, we Humans do have so few restrictions on our abilities. Disbelief will of course set you back if you indeed never try.

It's a somewhat proven fact that after about 7 years, males begin losing the ability to pick up languages. So it's a rare male that retains really good different language learning skills. Of course, perseverance is always a factor, but if not practiced on a daily basis, it tends to slip.

On the other hand, the proverbial "gift of gab" that women seem to possess serves them well with learning new languages in later life. But heck! Who would trade being able to chuck a spear really far for a better ability to learn languages?!

And then there's always math...

I agree.

So what's with the females that they can learn other languages easily? Is it the estrogen hormones? :)

My sister is/was studying Nihongo and after six months, she's already fluent with the language even if most of the study time is spent just having a self study. I mean through reading and listening the lessons.

But between my dad and mom, dad has a better memory.

Dad has a better memory for what?

It seems estrogen has something to do with it, but that is through the fetal development cycle and later brain structure.

I can't tell you that taking estrogen injections will make you a better language learner now. I can tell you it will soften your features and make you prone to all sorts of cancers and mood swings.

hi i used glutaphos tablet for a long time and it is very effective in me..i think the reason why it is not effective on u its because u dont drink it in time and properly..the right thing in drinking glutaphos is everynight before you sleep u drink one tablet. because u know it contains vitamin B12 and thiamine that helps relax your mind for u to become sleepy. and after you wake up u study ur lesson and u will see. u can memorize your lesson easily.

Alcohol! That's the answer. Everyone knows alcohol is a preservative, especially when mixed with formaldehyde and dioxin!!! Your brain will love you for it.

Of course, you may find playing with your toes the most mentally stimulating activity you've ever done, but isn't it all relative?

why do you need to improve your memory? as long as you have focused in whatever you do, it will easily be stored in your mind.

It's an interesting point... I have this friend that is very cerebral, however, one day he found himself walking away from his apartment and wondering whether he locked the front door. He had to go back to check. This started happening more often, and he asked me about it.

I told him that when he does minor tasks, such as locking a door, he has his mind on other, more esoteric things. Furthermore, I suggested that when he locks his door that he consciously stops thinking of other stuff, and root himself in the here-and-now. He hasn't had a problem since.

"Does anyone of you here knew what's the best drug/pill/vitamins, etc. to enhance our memory?"

No amount of drugs will enhance memory. It takes commitment, and practice, practice, practice and more practice. It takes deliberate intent and repetition, repetition, repetition, and still more repetition.

It is called PRACTICE, PRACTICE, and more PRACTICE.

No pill, potion, nor magic elixir is more effective. Hence,

PRACTICE AND/OR EXERCISE BY PRACTICE !
