How To Connect 2 Laptops Via WI-FI (Without Router/Modem)

01/20/2015 2:44 AM

I want to share data from my old laptop to new laptop. Both have a WI-FI. Is there easy way to copy date one to another without connection via cable.

I've used AdHoc Mode as your link suggests.

Define easy....I would just copy the files to a stick, or email them to myself...If we're talking a lot of volume, I would just use an external hard drive...which you should already have as a backup...

In the old days Solar Eagle's suggestion would have been called "sneaker net". Back then you would put the data on a floppy disk and carry it (possibly wearing sneakers) to the other machine. Another version of this was the often used quote that you can't beat the bandwidth of putting a box full of backup tapes in the back of a stationwagon and driving them across country.

The USB thumb drive suggestion is by far the easiest way to do.

If you really want to use WiFi you need to specify a little more information:

1) What is the operating system. It is usually easier to do "more than normal" with Linux. After establishing a connection you could use ftp, sftp, FileZilla or other file transfer programs.

2) Are the two computers connected to the same WiFi network? This often (not always) means that their #.#.#.# IP address has the same numbers for the first three positions. If this is true then the machines can probably ping each other and file transfer programs will work.

Windows boxes might have firewall issues. All I know of Windows firewalls is that a virus can pass but useful data can not.

from google download 'go to meeting" or "team viewer" to both lap top 1 & lap top 2.take the control of the laptop1 from which you wanna transfer data / files. just drag the data / file in to lap top 2.

apart from 'tem viewer' and 'go to meeting' there are many such available in google store

Are you sure this works? I was under the impression team viewer is just a remote control program but by no means does it allow you to share files.

Also I think this requires internet access, which I would refuse to accept if I could transfer wireless without the world to see it.

Think about it, you did not correctly answer the question as you assumed internet connection. It may not be there!

If it's WIndows 7 and you have a wired Ethernet Card and Wireless in the same Laptop then you can create a virtual WiFi hotspot on that Laptop then connect wirelessly from the other.

This is a very good guide http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-set-up-a-wireless-hotspot-From-WiFi-Windows/

Although cspal3 recommendation of using Team Viewer is a good one, you could also try LogMeIn.

This method would require a modem/router somewhere in the set-up (see post title) and use of the internet. Also, the data transfer rate would be limited to the upload rate from the sending machine.

If you are using Windows 7 (or possibly Vista) this is easy. Set up an ad-hoc wi-fi network on one machine and log into it from the other. No hub or DHCP server to issue ip addresses is required. This creates IP addresses in a different range to normal.

The big problem is that Windows 8 does not support this. (There is a very involved hack to do it, but it does not always work and I don't recommend it).

If your machines do support ad-hoc mode then you will need to use a hub with a wireless access point. Normally these are set up as DHCP servers.

I transferred my Win XP files to my Win 8.1 when I got it. It was real easy. I just had to put my XP files in a shared folder, and the 8.1 machine found it without me doing anything as I recall. I think I had the XP machine connected to the router. Now it's using its wireless, and I don't see a connection.

If both machines have 8.1, then there is "Windows Easy Transfer" app, but I haven't used that.

Yes! as long as you have the "admin rights" and password...

Connect them to the same WIFI router.

By now You should be able to see all connected peripherals on that router!

Be sure to Set both computer as "members" of the same "group" in network setup, i.e., "Home Group".

Set shared settings for "file folders", "printer", etc. you wanted to share in both computers.

Make sure files are of same type, as in "NTFS", etc., as in Windows OS..

Good luck!

I didn't read your post JDG... but, I'm sure the OP's quest is very doable!

If you can setup your computer to be remotely accessible by you or by anyone authorized, as well as the files within can also be remotely accessed / manipulated, then it is doable...

I've set up mine as described, and since been transferring "shared" data /video files between any of my 2 laptops, a neighbor's wireless desktop that are all linked via my local Wi-Fi... which thru this same local wi-fi router, a wireless camera is also connected. Used as my home security that I can remotely access / monitor sound, video, and replay recorded data anywhere as long as it is a secured internet connection!

Many of the answers here (including mine, which I didn't submit) ignored the subject line of the OP. It explicitly says WITHOUT ROUTER/MODEM. There are many ways to do it with a "real" network in place. The OP is looking for the best way to do it with a DIRECT laptop to laptop wireless connection (cut out the middleman/observer/spy).

I'm not quite sure what that means?? If one needs to be connected via Wi-Fi??

The Wi-Fi by itself can be a router??

Unless one still has a program called "Laplink", then there is really no need for a router!
