Thanks to the statisticians that sorted this information and presented it in a way we could understand.

And thanks to the person that posted it to help brighten up our day when so many others in this world of ours attempt to beat us down with their own personal brands of pessimism, hate and fear.

If you can't stem it, stick it!

Quote from myself!

And not in response to OP. Just an example!

Great stuff! OMG I'm so old.....I feel like I have witnessed nearly all of the technological advance of civilization....but it's nice to look at all the progress in a nutshell like this.....Thanks for taking the time...It seems sometimes that progress is so slow that it barely moves, it's only by looking in the rearview mirror that you can see how far we've come....it seems like only yesterday.....zzzzzzz

This lady died a few days ago, she was born before radio, aircraft, & computing existed. Her 91 year old daughter was interviewed & seemed a pretty lively old girl. This might make you feel a bit younger.

Thanks Andy. I needed that. Sometimes the prospects look pretty down; it was great to see some up.

Thanks Andy.

Just an observation: given that the population has about doubled in the last 50 years, is it significant that the photos of nearly everyone who said anything witty or clever are in monochrome.

Quotes that have had time to gain fame and recognition are easier to find.

In todays modern data age there are so many quotes and dialog getting thrown around (orders and orders of magnitude compared to yea old pre-internet days) that anything really good gets lost in the background noise of a billion billion tweets.

Yes it is a worry, the wall of China and the Roman arena did not solve the problem of different cultures, and appointing dictators to different areas only makes the problem worse? Extinction may be the answer? I hope not.

How will the coming Eurasian land war factor into this?

It is quite unlikely it will be fought below the nuclear threshold. Certainly this will factor into demographics, depending on the geographic intensity of the conflict.

Re: A Few Good Quotes!!

Andy,

Thanks for the quotes...very interesting and humorous.

Those reminded me of quotes by Yogi Berra. For those who are not familiar with American baseball history Yogi Berra was a major league catcher for the New York Yankees in the 40's and 50's and I think the 60's. He went on to being a manager and coach also for the Yankees. Despite his reputation as one of the greatest (if not THE greatest) catcher in history he may be even better known by his quotes many may be nonsensical while others are overly obvious. Here are a few of them:

  • You better cut the pizza into 4 pieces, I'm not hungry enough to eat 8
  • If you don't know where you're going, you might wind up some place else
  • Baseball is 90% mental, the other half is physical
  • In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is
  • You can observe a lot by watching
  • The future ain't what it used to be
  • I never said most of the things I said
  • A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore
  • Half the lies they tell about me aren't true

And some of the more well known ones:

  • When you come to a fork in the road, take it
  • It ain't over til it's over
  • it's like deja-vu all over again

Re: A Few Good Quotes!!

Good stuff. Some of them funny. Some of them astute observations. Some of them challenging when looked at in context. Some of these people were amazing leaders who had "thick skin" (which is the suit of a leader) and led according to their principles, values and purpose regardless of what numbnuts said about them.

One of my favorite quotes of all time is by D.L. Moody which says, "Our greatest fear in life isn't that we won't succeed, but that we will succeed at something that doesn't matter."

I think you missed an exchange Churchill is supposed to have had with Nancy Astor:-

Lady Astor said to Churchill, "If you were my husband, I'd poison your coffee," to which he responded, "Madam, if you were my wife, I'd drink it!"

Another good Churchill quote about some Cabinet Minister, "he is a humble little man who has a great deal to be humble about."

Churchill was a bit of a crumudgeon but he was certainly the right man for the right time in history. He didn't give up.

Another quote of his that I like is from the time when he was just put in as the Prime Minister. "I can finally sleep now because there is someone at #10 Downing who knows what to do." This was in the midst of WWII and Britain was going down in flames. He took on a monumental task of not just holding a nation together but making gains along with the rest of the Allies.
