Yes, many.

1. Load the missing .dll files.

2. Ask someone who is knowledgeable if it can be done.

3. The rest are irrelevant.

Certain types of licensed programs may require you to do a "migrate" process that ensures the program is deleted from the old computer when moving to the new.

Transfer as in moving files will not work if the dll's dont get registered.

Register the dll's by hand or find out if there is a batch routine in the install directory.
.

Alternativly just reinstall the software, no?

I don't have the installation disk that's why I'm stuck. I copy/paste dll files in the system folder located in the windows folder. It works with some programs (less complex ones). Just looking for some alternative solutions if anyone knows some tricks.

You cannot just cut - copy - paste the individual files in windows. Without the disk you are screwed. Find the program from a friend or download site and get it that way and then run the install from the disk. That is the only way it will work unless you have deep knowledge of windows and its registry, which it seems you do not. I'm not knocking you, I'm just being realistic!

  • What is the exact name and version of the software?
  • I have boxes and boxes of old software, maybe I have the disk?

Good luck

W ionderware is Square D's HMI graphics program. It running on NT so it's at least 10 years old. I'm familiar with the windows registry. Just haven't messed with it since they canned DOS. (Old school) How do you access the registry in XP. I'm trying to learn something

Be VERY careful and always make a backup when editing the registry. It can cause your system to become unstable or not boot at all. To access and edit the registry. Just type "regedit" in the command line on the start menu. I know it still works on my Win 7 machine. Im sure it works in XP as well. Not too sure about win 8 and newer.

Your best bet is to bite the bullet and purchase a new program. the time saved might be worth the cost of the program. From what I remember you will shell out a very nice golden penny for wonderware.

Did you actually install the program or just try to copy the files in the "program files" directory?

I didn't install the program, I just copied it. I was thinking about trying this: I have a spare xp installation disk. I'm going to upgrade the nt to xp with the disk, backup the program and install the backup on the other xp computer. It's an HMI program I'm try to transfer from one panelview to another.

I think you have to buy updated software. Since XP is now obsolete, get a new operating system first. If you don't, Let us know if the short cuts you make work out.

Seeing as you are running antique OS's, it is a really good bet that you could find the program you need by doing a search for 'older versions of *". Then all you need to do is download the appropriate version, scan it first for malware before installing it. All the dlls you will need should be there by default.

You may have to register the dll files using the regsvr32.exe program, which is available for all Windows versions from XP onwards and is used from the command line. Despite its name there are also versions for 64-bit OSs.
