NI-Cd Battery End Cell Voltage Significance

02/08/2015 7:16 AM

NI-Cd Cell capacity is function of End cell voltage (ECV).

Manufacturer catalog give battery capacity for different ECV for same model/type.

What is need of multiple (1.14, 1.1, 1.05, 1.0, 0.85, 0.65 V) ECV ?

End cell voltage is the lowest voltage the battery can be discharged to with damaging it.

"without" damaging it.

That's because Ni-Cds have a very sharp, steep drop in capacity that occurs at a voltage that is a function of the discharge rate. If you discharge it at a very low rate relative to its overall capacity then the ECV will be 1.14. If you discharge it at a very high rate then its ECV will be 0.65.

In either case the total AH (Amp Hours) is about the same, but the effect on the circuitry and the cell is very different. ECVs are usually used by battery/charger/equipment manufacturers to set charging rate and determine when to cut-off the battery from the circuit at some predetermined voltage below which the equipment will no longer function properly.

You explained about EVC of 1.14 V and .65 .What about other ECV 1.1, 1.05, 1.0, 0.85?

your explaination to relate ECV to discharge rate is bit non convencing.

Do your own research and prove me wrong.
