Small time inventors working for fun and profit

10/14/2005 1:16 PM

The Christian Science Monitor has an interesting article today entitled Better Mousetrap Builders, covering the exploits of "garage" inventors. According to the Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), of the 164,000 utility patents granted last year, some ten percent came from these private inventors.

Has anyone out there privately invented and patented something? I've got a few ideas I'm working on, but I'm not sharing until proof of concept / patent applications are finished.

All I can say is: Don't expect anyone to pat you on the back and say you did well. Just hope you came up with something like the tennis ball holder that is used for throwing a ball for a dog. Because if it is something that made someone's invention obsolete or treads on someone's market share, ol hell can brake loose. Don't even make it public until there is a patent granted on it or ol hell will brake loose. And keep in mind, that if you file in a foreign country where the have a sneak peak at eighteen months, the US will do the same and ol hell came brake loose. If you have a business, your phone can be rigged, if you have a job, just hope it will be still be employing you the next day.

I've got almost 14 years of experience with learning things that hard way. Out of five patent lawyers, only two where even remotely honest.

This can go on and on, but I would advice you to check out my web-site

http://mystupidrules.com and just to the introduction page and check out Rule Number 8 to find out how they can isolate you first.

Then there are other links following that will tell you about the bad parts of the whole patent industry.

If you have any question please feel free to email me.

Good luck and I really do mean that. Don't be naive.
