Piezoelectric Vibrators for Skin Stimulation

03/02/2015 12:00 PM

Since skin is densely filled with mechanoreceptors able to sense vibrations even with very short indentation (e.g. 30 micron) vibrating the skin could be a very effective way to provide a sensory feedback or sensory substitution.

I would like to develop a very thin and small (portable with a low power consumption) vibrator to stimulate human skin.

Therefore I was thinking to use piezoelectric vibrators but I do not know how to control them and if they can provide an effective stimulation within the frequency band of mechanoreceptors (from 1 Hz to 300 Hz).

Please, anyone could give me some clues about piezoelectric vibrators and their control (e.g. is there something already available on the market to be used as vibrator with its controller)?

Many thanks

I don't know where to start. There is a very large body of 'knowledge' on the subject.

In theory this can be done with piezoelectrics but a piezoelectric device is not really capable of producing much total movement in one crystal wafer without some very high voltages applied to the crystal. The electrical insulation then required to prevent shocks that will move muscles under the skin could very easily dampen away any tiny movements the crystal produces. Using a stack of piezoelectric crystals to minimize the voltage needed for the motion you want defeats your requirement for a thin transducer.

That's really low response for piezoelectric transducer.

I'd look elsewhere or at least talk to some suppliers.

This is an example of a totally different kind of skin stimulator

not going to achieve anything here with 30 microns!

all depends on how it's used

Look at the "Tens " equipment--Neurostimulation with pads placed on the skin---I have used two varieties four over 15 years for bad joints, knee replacements etc. They really do help with nerve stimulation... You will see Pro athletes on the sidelines with the pads over their injuries--As mentioned, lots of stuff out here for research---

A good design for your piezo driver will have almost all the power needed consumed by the piezo transducer(s), so they will be key.
You'll be stuck with that baseline power requirement.
The driver / controller should be simple enough unless multiple frequencies are involved. Can tactile perception of this kind differentiate between frequencies ?
The drive voltage wil be high enough for neural disruption, but there is a big difference between a small surface and entire limbs of the human body as part of an electrical circuit. Going to unconventional insulation ( maybe Teflon ) for the drive power conductors should take care of any shock hazard.
