Thrust Collar Design for Single Helical Gearing

03/11/2015 6:00 AM

Hi,

I would want to know about thrust collar design for Single Helical gearing.

I know the purpose of thrust collar and how it should be selected based on the pressure it can withstand. But can somebody share any information on -

1. How lubrication and cooling works in the thrust collar area?

2. How do we decide the taper between the thrust collar and the gearwheel face?

3. Whether a minimum film thickness is necessary between the collar and gearwheel face?

I have gone through few old patents and nowhere I have found about the design of thrust collars.

Thank you

  1. Go to GOOGLE.COM
  2. In the search box type THRUST COLLAR
  3. Do your research!

Sir,

I have done enough research on the topic and because I haven't found much information, I have poster the query here. I have found nothing more than a patent of 1960s and an ASME technical paper.

If someone knows better, it would be glad if you could help me.

You are trying to do something that has been accomplished by every gearbox manufacturer. Ask one of them.

If you are designing a new gearbox then you are way over your head if you are having difficulty on just the thrust washer.

Without knowing exactly what your application is you can consider a few options:

Adding a thrust bearing(available in a multitude of sizes and force) or incorporating a tapered roller bearing into the design or repair, or what ever it is.

Again not knowing, is the gearing enclosed so you can use simple splash lubrication??

Application is integral gear compressors(IGC). There is no space to accommodate a thrust bearing on the pinion line. We have used thrust collar earlier. But encountered certain failures.

I just want to know how the thrust collar taper is related to the working.

Also I would know what is the minimum film thickness that is to be maintained.

Thanks
