Another Question about Gaskets !!

07/11/2007 6:35 AM

Should the gasket be crushed so that it fits the whole flange groove ?

i mean what if the groove was big enough and a little more to take all the crushed gasket ? what if the raised face of both flanges touch ?

are the flange faces supposed to touch or should they be at a minimum gap seperated by the uncrushed portion of the gasket ?

thanks

refer to mfgs spec or applicable code for prooper torque value for gasket material and applications

what are mfgs specs ? what about my previous questions ? is the gasket supposed to act as a stopper ? ie stop the raised faces of flanges from touching or can / is it supposed to fit totally in the groove so that the raised faces touch ?

usually does the gasket come in a height bigger than that of the grooves so that even when it crushed a small portion of it is still seperating the faces or it doesnt matter ?

Between this and your other posts it sounds like you are dealing with things that could result in significant harm and damage to people and property.

Do yourself a favor and hire a qualified engineer.

It is commonplace for gaskets to fail if OVERTIGHTENED. This is true of lg and sm diameters. This is true of metal and non-metal gaskets.

What do you mean -- what do I mean?! I mean manufacturers specs (gasket) or code requirements (application)!!

You are really starting to make me nervous.

Primavera,

Are you being serious with us? If so and there is not a language problem here you need to get some help from someone with dirt under his fingernails.

Are we talking about 'O' ring type gaskets? If we are then the flange faces will touch & the groove will not be completely filled. Your 'O' ring supplier should be able to advise you on groove dimensions or refer to the appropriate national standard that applies where you are.

Do you know the feeling you get JUST before something really bad happens. Like a car running a stop sign? Or a child losing his/her balance on the top stair?

You might be experiencing that feeling very soon. Please do not ignore!

thanks "Nigh" thats the one mate. its an RTJ Type no R103 duplex steel gasket.

i have the drawing with the groove details and all. it looked to me that when crushed, the gasket will fill the whole groove and the faces will touch. still the groove will not be all filled as you've said.

@conscia, dont worry about damaging properties and playing with people's lives. this is if you're really worried about that. but my questions have nothing to do with what i do.

@pepper. you bet i am dead serious.

@rummel, enough with the metaphors about kids losing their balance off chairs. I had a bad dinner consisting of beans. would you pull my finger please.

bottom line, i'll back off now and hide in the shades. i ll ask more questions later while in my guest status.

regards pro people.
