Marine Engine for Road Use

07/11/2007 6:14 AM

Hi,

I have been asked to adapt a marine engine (V6 Johnson Evinrude I think) for use in a car for motorsport use. The engine has no thrust bearings on the crankshaft, and I need to fit a gearbox and clutch, which will put thrust on the crankshaft. I am just wondering as to how to go about removing this trust, that I will have added, from the engine. Is there a gearbox with an enclosed clutch/flywheel out there, so all I will need is to get a driveshaft made up, or will I have to add bearings of some sort outside the engine? Thank you in advance.

There are some small road racing cars that use outboard motor power heads.

SCCA Formula 500.

I built a Garden Tractor for Pulling Competition using an old inline Mercury 6 cylinder.

I used a "1-1/4" Four Bolt Flange Bearing (Large Housing) SKU: UCF207-20" with a tapered roller bearing hooked to the crankshaft of the Mercury with a flex coupler. I cannot remember what I used for a transmission except it was a small tractor trans. I also built a Trike using a the same engine with a snowmobile CVT drive. It worked quite well and was very fast.

I would look into the F500 for what you need as know they use snowmobile and outboard motors.

Good Luck

This sounds very promising! How did you go about cooling this engine, since a marine engine uses a waste system, and thats not really an option on land! How did you attach the gearbox to the engine, or were they able to be sort of independant? I have come across a Harley-Davidson gearbox, the Sputhe made gearbox, as it attaches to the crankshaft via a belt, and has the clutch enclosed with the gearbox, which seems like a possible method of getting power to the wheels!

Strangely enough, I ran into the opposite problem a few months back, which was putting a Ford 3.8l V6 into a custom boat. My boss had the engine and I had to make it work. What kind of horsepower/ torque are you working with, and what kind of car is it going in?

Well, I think I'm looking at 200bhp, but far more torque, in the high 300's. It will be going into the back of some small car like a fiat, or opel corsa, that size car, for autograss use.
