Why Do Industrial Accidents Happen?

Posted August 21, 2009 7:36 AM

Despite best efforts by many technical professionals, industrial accidents continue to occur with alarming frequency, even in leading countries. Only top management can decide to put safety above productivity, but what's the best way to pressure executives to toe the safety line? Is it lawsuits, stricter government regulations or some other more creative solution?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Electrical Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Electrical Components today.

I think most of accident happens due to hurry. during a Project execution or during shift reliving people always are in hurry. Resultant the minor point those could be danger in process industry are neglected. This is the reason for most accidents. If people deliver their job honestly and management support them not to make hurry accidents would be nil.

What we do here in Canada is simple.

1. Employers who employ people who work in dangerous environments pay Workman's Compensation Insurance, which supports injured workers with money (salary replacement) and medical treatment.

2. When there have been no accidents, the employer pays a minimum rate for WCI. When there's an accident, he starts to pay more for each worker he employs. When there's a second accident, he pays significantly more. If there's a third, etc., he pays VERY much more.

In brief, every accident over a period of time costs an employer more and more, and the cost rises quicker and quicker as numbers rise.

Another reason for accidents: fraud. When skilled tradesmen know that a construction project is ending and that they'll lose their job, some start having 'accidents' that get them insurance money for when they won't work. One particular type of fake accident is frequent: back injuries, because they're hard to detect. What employers do in cases like this is to keep workers working until the employers no longer need them, at which time they fire them without warning (but they still pay them severance pay). Thay way, the workers don't start having accidents before they lose their jobs on construction projects.

"Whats the best way to pressure executives to toe the safety line?"

Thats an enlightened approach...

We have found that when agencies who are responsible for safety (or environment) COLLABORATE with employers who are given opportunity to use their expertise without penalty, Accident rates go down. So much for pressure.

I have dealt with OSHA 3 times and have decided they are not worth the powder to blow them to hell! Just another useless arm of the government! They do not protect the working man but do protect business!

The industrial accident happen due to two reasons

1] Unsafe condition in the working enviormrnt

2] Unsafe act

Firstly list out all the unsafe conditions in the industry and eliminate one by one

Secondly unsafe act like not wearing PPE , not following saftey in the working area can be elimanted by forming saftey polcy of the ompany and people wo do not follow can be punished
