A Grab-bag of Wave Energy Pilot Projects

Posted May 14, 2016 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Ocean waves can deliver a more reliable renewable energy source than wind, and require much smaller equipment if you can find the ideal place to locate them. From a technical standpoint, it is possible that wave energy could one day supply 25% of U.S. electrical consumption, especially since 50% of the population lives within 50 miles of a coast. However, the harsh ocean environment is a challenge causing a sluggish move into wave harnessing technologies. A recent DOE competition resulted in a "grab-bag" of 1/50th scale designs. This article covers the technology used by the top four contenders, noting environmental impact considerations.
