Mysterious Source Jams Satellite Communications

Posted January 26, 2007 7:40 AM

From New Scientist - Latest Headlines:

Paris-based satellite company Eutelsat is investigating "unidentified interference" with its satellite broadcast services that temporarily knocked out several television and radio stations. The company declined to say whether it thought the interference was accidental or deliberate. The problem began Tuesday afternoon, blocking several European, Middle East and northeast African radio and television stations, as well as Agence France-Presse's news service. All transferred their satellite transmissions to another frequency to resume operations.

Based on the geographic location of the affected areas, I find it hard to believe that this was an "accident".

Perhaps the recent Albertis investment (32%) played a role in the foul play.

Russian jamming has been going on for the last 50 years or so.

As a note to Ms. Theresa Hitchens of the Center for Defense Information think tank:

China recently "destroyed" a satellite in orbit, supposedly with a ballistic missile. What was the motivation for that act? Gaining tactical information and intercept experience, most likely... Are these two events linked? Both our military and civilian communications are dependent upon satellite communications, GPS , targeting info, etc.

How difficult would it be to nock out a satellite with a missile?

It is a long shot but you can guide it and it can also provide feedback from onboard sensing equipment.

A direct hit may not be necessary but the blast effect will be considerably less due to the lack of atmosphere to transmit the blast force.

On the plus side, if you can change its orbit that may all it takes to make it useless or at least ensure it's doom in few more orbits.

Another thought is that it would cost just about the same to destroy a satellite as to establish one in orbit.

Can anyone add to that or correct me? Please.
