New Radar Gun May Inform Police If You're Texting

Posted September 19, 2014 2:36 PM

From Autoblog:

Typically, we don't really enjoy seeing radar-gun-wielding traffic cops. They have a tendency to ruin our day. But, a new sort of radar gun may have us quickly singing their praises. The Virginian-Pilot reports that there's a new tool that will be able to tell officers if a driver is texting rather than paying attention to the road. Oh yes, we like this idea.

Now, if this radar gun could vaporize the car before the driver kills someone...

Maybe that could have it trigger rapid deployment of a 'stinger'.

If there were any politicians who were not WHORES, the solution is simple.

Virtually all phones have the ability to sense movement. So, just mandate an app that disables texting when the phone is going faster than 5 mph.

Unfortunately, we have no politicians who are not whores and they all sell themselves to numerous bidders, not just the highest "john".

So, texting is not illegal, anywhere, because of the golden rule. Them what has the gold makes the rules.

I like your view and thinking. We already have GPS on our phones rather we want or not so it wouldn't be that hard to build a speed limit into the phones. And I'm thinking some where around 3mph, even when walking fast it can be hazardous if your distracted.

I say make it 5 MPH. Anybody dumb enough to walk while texting doesn't deserve to contribute to the gene pool anyway.

Is it wrong to text-and-ride?

So you riding in a friend's car and it would be mandated by law that thou shalt not text?

Same goes for riding a bus, train, or boat?

Let 'em eat cake.

Ok, it's not as simple as I made it sound.

It is still a significant problem that police departments are not addressing.

And law makers won't do anything because the phone company's paid lobbyists give them money.

It would be nice if people spent more effort addressing their own issues for a change instead of making someone else look after their behavior problems.

It would be a lot less costly, too.

It baffles me that people don't see the excessive use of social media as the neurosis that it is.

While driving?

While doing anything. It would not surprise me to find people doing it while having sex.

People carry on phone conversations while sitting on the john in public rest rooms. Why not text and sex? Probably an app for that, but I really don't want to go there.

You have a valid point.

But, my opinion is that texting is most the pervasive of the obsessions.

Re: New Radar Gun May Inform Police If You're Texting

But how do you know they are texting?

They could be checking facebook or doing some other social media stuff (CR4? no way!!) or looking at porn or surfing the web or playing subway surfer or 2048 (highly recommended, but not while driving).

It boils down to being responsible. Walking or driving around with your face glued to your mobile device is the sickness.

Well shit man, they might even be looking at a map.

They band all drinking driving because of irresponsible people who can't keep their vehicle under control, so whats the difference? They both kill and maim people, one's as bad as the other. How about DATD, (Dads Against Texting Drivers)? It's my new movement!

How would you be able to tell its you or your wife with the phone and who is driving?

Thats about a stupid idea which takes the responsibilty away from the humans.

Blame the phone.

"takes the responsibilty away from the humans."

Humans prove many times a day that they are irresponsible!

We wouln't be having this discussion if they were responsible.

And, just what the hell is wrong with speaking into a phone instead of engaging in typing, which takes ALL your concentration off the road?

Stupid is as stupid does.

Re: New Radar Gun May Inform Police If You're Texting

My reply is in meant to be applied to a broader range of behaviour beyond texting and driving (drug use, text, drinking and driving, etc.)

Yes, you are indeed correct, humans have shown themselves to be irresponsible. I think what many of us on CR4 are concerned about has to do with society backing off of holding those acting irresponsibly responsible for the actions and punishing them without infringing on those of us who are acting responsibly.

It's a difficult balance as the irresponsible ones don't only endanger themselves, but put other's lives at risk too.

The question is....is there a way to allow people to have the freedom to act irresponsibly, if they so choose, without endangering the rest of society?

The answer may be different for different behaviours. Getting more specific as in the case of operating and automobile, can we regulate/police/enforce certain rules and restrictions for the driver without impacting passengers? While I'm not a big fan of self driving cars, perhaps that would be possibility (although we are a few years, if not decades away from having zero manually driven cars on the road).

And my response is the same.

There are laws prohibiting most of the things you mentioned above. Why? Not because humans are a responsible race, but because some of us are NOT.

Look no further than the politicians who enact our laws today. For the most part they are not acting responsibly, but rather in their own self interest. In order to keep the lucrative "jobs" they have now where they mostly do nothing and are overpaid to do it.

There's no easy answer. But, rest assured that our political leaders are not going to do what's best for us, unless someone bribes them to do it.

Too many issues for this to be successful.

1) Isolating which car is actually emanating the signals "identified" as texting given the ranges the signals will travel, multi-path reception, etc.

2) A passenger in the vehicle could be texting

3) Voice to text program running (hands-free)

4) Deciphering each carriers data streams to parse out what is text, data, music, voice, etc.

Simple visual confirmation is all that is really needed here. The hands down low, head slightly tilted down and no lateral movement of the head is almost a dead give-away.

Ironically, it's become more dangerous now when people keep their phones in their laps to avoid getting caught.

Simple solution would be to ban all manufacturing phones with the ability to text. We lived life before cell phone and I'm sure we could still live with out sexting texting.

Or mandate all cars be manufactured with heads up displays! Just think, porn on the go

Once again we will punish everyone for the ills of a few because it is too difficult to address our social pathologies.

Seems we have spent a lot of money educating ourselves that we need not be concerned with being responsible because some other central authority will do that.

At the very least, lamp poles should be tuned to a musical scale so that people that walk into them while texting provide some sort of entertainment.
