Sweden is Burning Biofuel Made from Bunnies

Posted October 20, 2009 4:57 PM

From INHABITAT:

Scientific American recently reported that Sweden uses a pretty strange source for some of its heating fuel: rabbits. Stockholm has an overabundance of the cotton-tailed critters, and the hungry bunnies are decimating city parks. To cut back on bunny populations and create a greener source of heating fuel for Swedes, city employees round up the rabbits, shoot them, freeze them and then ship them to a heating plant where they're incinerated. And yes, the thought of it makes our soul hurt, too.

Couldn't they use squirrels instead? I have one in mind.

Sounds like you and Steve S have plans for Kris & Del . Seriously, maybe the Swedes should make the rabbits into bunny-burgers and then collect the undigested remains of last night's bunny-burger dinner for fermentation into biogas .

Or cats, you could definitely heat a pretty large city with cats as fuel.....

It is a bit like the Planet Ark Christmas card recycling. Put your used cards in an envelope and mail them. Gee what a clever use of resources, recycling paper one gram at a time.

Cremating the bunnies would be a net energy loss situation. Round them up in decent quantities and use them as meat, now you're talking. With a bit of luck I may bag a couple this weekend.

My uncle had a good system. He called it "cats and rats."

He breed both. He skinned the cats - and sold the pelts.
(the profit) He then fed the cat carcases to the rats, who
prospered. (got fat) and then let the cats catch the rats.

Quite a good self-feeding system really. No outlay, they bred
them selves, fed them selves, and the price of cat skins in
the war time was quite good; made mittens, plumbing wipes etc.

Didn't have to shoot anything; my uncle prospered, but the smell!
Suppose you cannot have everything.
