Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

What's Your Favorite Movie Car?

Posted December 08, 2009 12:01 AM by dstrohl

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which turned up here last week, was on a vast list of autos that developed after we posted updates on finding the Better off Dead Camaro, Risky Business Porsche and other iconic movie cars. Since then, we've both found some more and had suggestions for literally dozens of others that should be preserved for posterity.

Hemmings commenters came up with the 1974 Dodge Monaco Bluesmobile from The Blues Brothers, the Landmaster from Damnation Alley, Rick's Power Wagon from Simon & Simon, the 'Cuda from Mannix, and the National Lampoon Family Truckster. What would you add?

Note: The picture at top-left is the the '61 Ferrari California Spyder (250 GT) from Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Either the Charger from "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry" or the "Piss Yellow Deuce Coupe" from "American Grafitti". I wish I had both.

Here's another one - The General Lee!

(I guess it was really from TV originally, but a movie was made as well.) I was reminded of this by the blog entry about buying one of the original General Lee cars that wasn't actually used and was therefore still in good shape. My son was given a Hot Wheels General Lee when he was a tot. He is 22 now and we have gotten rid of most of those toys, but I still have that little car left - saving it for myself!

We have a guy here in the local car racing club that has a Shelby Cobra. He bangs the hell out of it on a regular basis racing it.

Personally I think he's nuts but I guess if you have his kind of $ you can do whatever you want with it.

scotchdrnkr, ya gotta be kidding me right? That Cobra owner is literally banging up his precious Cobra racing it? What shape is it usually in when you see it?

Honestly, some peeps just don't know the real value of $$$$, even if they have wads of the stuff to throw around and own very expensive Big Boy Toys. It should be made a crime to even spit on an original Shelby of any type!! And that Cobra owner ought to be charge with abuse and endangerment!!!!

I think I'll crawl back under my 'Lil rock and dream away thinking this was all a bad bad dream....

If you want to feel really bad, look at the annual Goodwood Revival meeting where hundreds of original machines from all ages are raced hard, sometimes by the drivers from the same era. The comment often made is that these cars were made to race & that is what they should do. You can see Cobras & a Ferarri 'bread van' here (poor quality video).

Plymouth Valiant in Duel. It was an anti-cool car.

Yes, Dennis Weaver was great. Not bad for a budding film director, Spielberg.

Well these are all great Movie cars, the 66 Batmobile is #2 for me and the Knightrider Firebird (Kit) is #3, but this is my favorite Movie (well TV show) car of all time from the 60's... Gerry Anderson's Supercar from the early animated puppet show staring Mike Mercury. My childhood was full of dreams I had to possibly make this car someday.

A bit of a large cabin for the driver (puppets took a bit of room..hehe!!)

Hi Nigh!

Yes Supercar was great. I have all the video's as well. The first year was in 1961 and was black and white, the next few years were color and the animation or supermarionation was superb. I see your from the UK and that was were Supercar was made. With 007, and so many other good shows, UK television was also superb. Im from the states, but in the 60's we all loved these programs.
