Aardvark landmine clearance.

Posted February 01, 2007 7:33 AM

From Neatorama:

The Aardvark landmine clearance system is one bad machine! More than one, actually, as there are different models. The rotating chain technology reminds me of a bush hog, but on a much grander scale.

Isn't this the same as the chain flails fitted to tanks in WW2?

Certainly looks like yet another version of the various flail tanks from WW2. Either it works really well or nobody is truly thinking about solving the problem.

Over the past weekend, there was a segment on the Aardvark on the Discovery Channel (Future Weapons show than likely). The broadcast indicated that the machine could not only change the rpm setting of the toating chains (thereby modifying the applied force of the impacts) but it also had the ability to drive the rotating chains down to a depth of nearly three feet below grade. The technology did not look all that advanced but considerable effort had been put into the protection of the operator.
