R&D, Despite Hard Times

Posted January 24, 2010 8:00 AM

Long-time Machine Design editor, Ken Korane, recently provided food for thought with an editorial about engineering companies making gains despite hard times. One key to success: partnering with companies that provide innovation, cost-effective production, and energy-efficient design. Working with partners and suppliers who share an R&D philosopy translates to a competitive edge. A commitment to research and development also helps position a company for rapid growth when the economy revives. What steps has your company taken to preserve R&D?

R&D is more of a culture than a process in organizations.

It is s sign of continuous quality, services and product improvement.

R&D need not all times evolve on huge funds and infrastructure.

Just periodical discussions, small trials and feed back analysis are part a good R&D programme.

R&D at sustainability can take companies into future complications, competitiveness and complexities on energy, customer satisfaction, productivity, technological leadership and market excellence.

Inter institutional R&D must foster collective and mutual development of all stake holders and is a best strategy to avail resources and capabilities than being single with technical handicaps.

Even an employee's mind of concern and development of his product is potential which needs motivation and encouragement.

The Japanese are masters of this collective art, which a culture to be followed by all of us.

R&D- make it round the clock and 365 days for a an assured future to all.

The word abt the Japanese... i dont join with that...bcoz..the germans,briton,italians...they have marked huge trails in R&D.The swiss technologies are even popularising in indian markets. The germans during the period of World war2 have invented a lot of military as well as daily needful equipments which serve complex purposes using simple mechanisms. This type of equipments need R&D of higher levels, even Patience. The japanese are still into technologies relating to electrons....The market for these types are not always bright......Even Indians develop softwares which needs updates soon(witin 6-7 mths),,,they cannot be even called as technologies.

deevamp40,

Nice meeting you in this forum. I do agree on your view that R&D and innovations are very well fostered from all parts of the world like the Europeans, U.S etc, which had lead to the level of life what we are leading now.

As regards to Japanese, whether their mastery is in electronics alone [ even chemicals, heavy engineering, automobile are worth mentioning] alone are into others- the team spirit, collective innovations, new applications, new product designs- all could be feasible only via committed R&D. I have no bias about any country because innovation is the best way to improve our quality of life and means for sustainable future. R&D is the key action behind all developments and competence development, believe it, it is a mad non stop game.

The leader hits the bull.
