Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Want a Portable Ferris Wheel?

Posted January 28, 2010 12:01 AM by dstrohl

We sure didn't have this where I grew up. Apparently, trucks like this 1957 Chevrolet 4400 would ride around residential neighborhoods back in the day, stop, and offer totally awesome Ferris wheel rides for your kids. While I admire the entrepreneurial spirit behind it, I would've cringed from this as a kid. Probably played Mr. Ding-a-ling music while they were at it, too.

From the seller's description:

"The Ferris wheel is PTO driven. The vehicle is in need of some restoration, the bottoms of the Ferris wheels cabs need some sheet metal work. The truck body is in good condition. But if you can do the work yourself-you have it made!"

I remember these and other types of truck-based rides coming to my NYC neighborhood in the warmer weather when I was a child (just a few years ago... ). Why would you have 'cringed' at this? Would you cringe from something as simple as roller skates or a bicycle, too?

This was from a time when kids played outdoors, got dirty, ate dirt, rode on these things and lived to tell the tale. It's nice to see that these trucks still exist and I hope someone restores it. I'll go for a spin on it!

I grew up in Queens, and there was a whip that came around once and a while. How about the knife sharpening truck? Do you remember them?

I vaguely remember that; he also fixed umbrellas, a skill highly prized in my household. I remember several types of rides-on-trucks, and millions of kids (OK, thousands) would appear as soon as they heard its music or saw it coming.

I remember these in Brooklyn. There were whips, merry-go-rounds, and a large swing like affair which was rocked manually by the driver.
