Say Goodbye to Paper Pages?

Posted February 13, 2010 7:54 AM

Though Amazon's Kindle and Barnes & Noble's Nook may be getting most of the publicity, get ready for a flurry of introductions of e-Readers, writes BusinessWeek. About two dozen of these book-reading devices have already been introduced, with total sales expected to double to six million units in 2010. Are you ready to scrap paper pages for an e-Reader? If you are, what are you looking for from such a device: cost, speed, display quality, ease of navigation, ready access to books, ability to "lend" books to friends?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Quality Control, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Quality Control today.

I gave up most paper books for the original Kindle. I was after portability and convenience. I also wanted the ability to download out of copyright classics over the net and add them to my (digital) library without having to increase the square footage of my domicile.

That said, my technical reference library is still mostly paper.

Oh, and my Analog SF mag shows up without me having to trudge through 3 feet of snow to the mailbox!!

I consider buying a e-reader once in awhile, but I really love books for some of the reasons listed here.

Cost: I buy a lot of used books off Amazon for very little. I recently bought a hardcover book in great condition for $1 ($4 after shipping, but still...)

Speed: Books go at your own speed. I don't have to worry about lagging technology when I am trying to escape into a book.

Ability to Lend: I get genuinely excited when people are interested in reading. When someone is curious about something I'm reading, I'll lend it to them; some really great conversations can come from sharing a book.

Ease of Navigation: What's easier than turning a page?

Not to say that e-Readers don't have points that counter mine here. For me though, reading as a personal experience that provides a nice break from the glare of a computer screen.
