If it's getting bigger, where is it expanding to?

I love cosmology, but I get frustrated when people talk about the "discovery" of dark energy and dark matter. Both of these are only hypotheses, like string theory, branes and the multiverse, suggested to explain what we think we observe. The ancients cooked up supernatural beings to explain the weather, the sun and the stars. I have an odd feeling that dark energy and dark matter may turn out to be equally wrong.

Dark energy is what makes your socks get baggy. Quantum disentanglement is why one of a pair of socks will disappear. With space getting bigger faster, we could end up with half a sock drawer.
