Do You See the Resemblance?

Posted March 02, 2010 6:00 AM by CarDomain

Neither do we at CarDomain, but the guy who designed the car on the left owns the car on the right, and claims to be heavily influenced by Detroit designs of the late 60s and early 70s. Here's an excerpt from an Auto Trader Classics article about Kia designer Michael Torpey.

"A big strong face on a car is 90% of the story" says Torpey. As a small car, the Soul had to have strong face to square off with the SUV's on America's highways. Look at the lower skid-plate grille shape on the Soul and you will see a striking resemblance to the '57 Cadillac. That same grille also shares an awful similar look to Torpey's sweetheart, the '71-72 Road Runner. Take a look at those headlights again, and then think back to the brass-era cars of yesteryear."

What do you think?

If I were designing a car today I would also be heavily influenced from the American cars of the 60's and 70's. Perfect examples of what not to do, in my opinion.

1. Both cars appear to have four wheels (this would require additional views to confirm).

2- Both cars have headlights.

3- Both cars have front bumpers.

4- Both cars have what appear to be external rear view mirrors.

5- The cockpits of both cars are shielded by a windshield.

6- Both cars appear to have relatively flat cockpit roofs.

7- Both cars appear to have independent side windows for the front and the back passenger compartments, separated by a vertical post that may or may not be structurally important.

These are the similarities I can identify from the views presented. There may be additional similarities not visible from these angles...

I've owned a 2010 Soul for about a month now.

I once owned a 1957 Caddie Coupe.

Both cars have/had a very strong front end presence, and both appeal to me. I've gotten a lot of comments (positive) on the Soul.

I do have to say that I certainly appreciate the gas mileage and the standard toys the Soul provides that the Caddie never had, especially the USB port for my music.

But, no, I don't see any resemblance to the Road Runner.

I think the designer was trying to say that his design was influenced by what he perceives as the negative aspects of the cars of the 60s and 70s and he deliberately tried to keep his car from resembling the American Classics in any way other than those most basic already pointed out by another poster.

For the record, I have a 1965 Buick Skylark Convertible and I would not trade that beauty for any car on the market today.
