Tracking Electric Use Could Allow Utilities to Track You, Too

Posted March 16, 2010 7:57 AM

From NYT > Technology:

Smart electric grids are championed by the federal government, conservation groups and industry as good for the economy and the environment. The digital meters in homes enable measurement and two-way communication with utilities so consumers can trim electricity use. But some technology policy organizations worry that smart meters pose a potential threat to privacy and could be exploited by online marketers, government agencies, criminals and others.

So what?

Next they can monitor my water meter and can tell when I flush the loo. Who the **** cares? If you think that spying on my electric usage is an invasion of privacy, you must be Rip Van Winkle because most vestiges of privacy were gone decades ago. People willingly tell supermarkets exactly what they buy and when. People blab stuff over cell phones in public that would make a sailor blush. We willingly use credit/debit cards that track everything we buy. You like the convenience of EZ-Pass, now they know your travel habits. And on, and on, and on.

Seriously, can't these ninnies find anything better to write about?
