Sizing Up Liquid Metal Battery Tech

Posted March 19, 2010 8:58 AM

From Discovery News - Top Stories:

Recently I got a glimpse at energy-related research in the works at MIT during an afternoon at the MIT Energy Initiative, an interdisciplinary program pursuing sustainable energy solutions. Among the mind-blowing projects is a liquid metal battery for grid-scale energy storage. Energy storage will increase in importance as more renewable power sources like wind and solar come online and utilities work to set up smarter systems to handle them.

Pumped water storage systems are still by far the cheapest easiest to create and remove and for the most part water and dirt are well known for being environmentally neutral when mixed or spilled. Plus they have fairly standard multipurpose aspects for public recreation and positive wildlife management when designed properly.

As far as I know ducks just don't work well in pools of liquid metal!

The best way to store energy from whatever source is using nature's way-make oil. Oil can be made very efficiently from wind, solar or any other kind of energy and in doing the job a cleaner environment can be developed by transforming all sorts of trash into oil just like nature does it.
