Determining the Best Course of Action

Posted March 30, 2010 7:44 AM

The lead story this month considers the environmental impact of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), chemicals which were once thought to be safe for the environment. As the green revolution in the chemicals industry presses on will more suprises await scientists?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Chemical Manufacturing, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Chemical Manufacturing today.

Are you kidding? HCFCs are well on the way to being phased out, so this is old hat. The real refrigerant is ammonia, anyway (spoken by an old ammonia fart, to be sure).

The "Freon" group did indeed offer some immediate safety advantages over sulfur dioxide and ammonia, or flammables such as propane. There was nothing wrong about that, though later discoveries showed the ozone-depleting potential of the HCFCs. So we learned something new, and are now dealing with it. Will more surprises await? Perhaps yes, and if so we will need to address them. But the tone of this question is quite naive.

Hi Tornado,

You are absolutely right! This is not a valueable question because Freons, Foranes, and other HFCs are not available anymore.

Also, we must be vigilant with new chemicals because we don't understand well the consequences on us, and the nature around us.

Wait for few comment from smart people, Gil.
