Fuel is made to certain ASTM specifications. When it does not meet
these standards, we could refer to it as "bad fuel". We also tend to
refer to diesel as "bad fuel" when we see symptoms such as dark hazy fuel, filter plugging, sludge buildup in tanks, poor engine performance, excessive smoke and emissions, etc.
We refer to fuel as "good fuel" when diesel is clear and bright. Often, however, no reference is made at all to such fuel. We simply use it
and take fuel quality and peak engine performance for granted.
The following ASTM chart lists the properties for Low sulfur No. 1-D, No. 1-D, Low Sulfur No. 2-D, No. 2-D,
and No. 4D.
