Engineers Get No Respect

Posted April 21, 2010 10:37 AM

From Discovery News - Top Stories:

To hear some engineers tell it, they feel a lot like Rodney Dangerfield. They don't get no respect. We'll see. Today, on Engineering Works! Listen to the podcast. It's pop quiz time. Name two famous scientists. If you pay attention to science at all, it's easy. Albert Einstein. Stephen Hawking. We know Einstein for the theory of relativity. Hawking for his work in cosmology. There are lots more.

Hmmm..
I think the story misses the point, I think we get some respect we just don't get the remuneration.
I mean if you ask 'name 3 famous engineers', I'd guess everyone could come up with a few, ok they may need some prompting like 'who invented the airoplane?.. telephone TV etc'
But if you said name 3 famous accountants..... zzzzzz

C'mon wake up I said name three... oh forget it.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Oh, I dunno. Every time I walk into someone's home or business and see something that I had a hand in creating (after all, I can't take all the credit ) I get a warm & fuzzy remuneration.

The downside is my local watering hole won't accept that currency for a pint. But still...

In the words of H.G.Wells' Mr Polly I meant 'pecuniary remuneration'

The only famous accountants are the ones that get prosecuted.

A girlfriend of a mechanical engineer mate, once wondered why it took him 4 years to learn how to fix cars.

I suspect the main reason engineers don't get noticed is that they aren't good at promoting what ordinary people think is important. Engineers admire knowledge, technical skill and problem solving ability, most outsiders don't understand, they think money, flashy clothes, sporting conquests and fame are what's important.

Give any decent engineer an interesting problem and they'll work all weekend to solve it. When they give you the answer they'll say something like "It was easy when I realised ...".

Do the same for an accountant/lawyer/MD and they say "that'll be 100 dollars please".

Still it is fun, and we get paid to solve problems.

Client: What is your fee?

Lawyer: $50 to answer 3 questions.

Client: Don't you think that's a bit pricey?

Lawyer: No, what's your third question?
