This issue cites a statistic that more than 70% of surveyed mechanical engineers are happy and secure in their current positions and comfortable with their current salaries. Are you feeling more secure in your job today? How about tomorrow: is it a brighter shade of grey than you've seen in the past 2 years?

Re: Are You a Happy Engineer?

Two years ago, I was not happy. I was working as a Supplier Development Engineer and didn't feel secure in my position as I felt the bottom was about to fall out (and it did) and supplier development was not a "needed" position.

I went to my boss and he told me my position could be eliminated. I was scared. A few days later, he asked me if I could do the job of a design engineer. I told him I could, and he arranged for me to "transfer" to the design dept. Well, that transfer came with a small bump in pay because the minimum pay for a Sr. Design Engineer was $5K more then I was making. After 5 months working in design, (my boss was a jerk ) I had to leave. My new job came with a small bump in pay, $5K, so for a year that I thought I would be unemployed, I did OK.

This past year I have truly enjoyed my job and my boss saw that and I got a 6.88% increase when the department was only getting 3%.

So, I found a home, happy and very content.
