Far Out from the Far East: USB Air Filtration Mask

Posted February 17, 2007 11:52 AM

From SCI FI Tech:

Man, I hope I never work anywhere that would have me thinking wearing one of these is a good idea. Straight from Japan comes the USB-powered mask, allowing you to filter out all the SARS and avian flu germs floating around your infected cubicle. Not to mention cooties! This thing is just flat-out creepy. Also, why is it USB powered? What if you go outside into the germ-filled air? Then what, you're just screwed? I don't think the global health situation is so dire that we need to be plugged into personal air filtration devices quite yet. Maybe in a few years, but come on, let's enjoy the last few years of pre-apocalyptic living for as long as possible, shall we? — Adam Frucci

aside from the fact that many mobile phones have usb outs theses days..

i think you'll find that in the middle east these are probably not a bad idea, and this (in my mind ) will be the start of many such products..

Over the last year or so I have seen a large number of USB-powered devices come out of Japan (and a few other places), ranging from everything from hotplates to sex toys. Most of them however are nothing more than toy gimmicks using the new(ish) technology power source (USB supply). Sure, some of them are potentially useful such as the flexible LED light and the battery charger, but I don't believe that this air filtration device falls into this category. Upon close inspection this device (also from Japan) uses two small unfiltered fans (one on either side of the mask) to blow air onto the actual active element of the face mask - a simple cloth filter mask. I fail to see how this toy has any filtering use whatsoever, as opposed to just using the mask on its own.
