Radiators of the Future

Posted February 20, 2007 2:22 PM

From Neatorama:

Every month, DesignBoom hosts a competition where aspiring designers can show off their skills by creating futuristic, yet usable, everyday objects. This month's contest results highlight the best "Radical Radiators" … which sounded rather boring until I browsed through the unique entries. The finalist shown in the picture above provides a cutout for either feet, a cat, or a teapot (to heat the teapot just remove the green plastic insert).

After looking through the entries, and going back twice to the winner, I confess to being somewhat disappointed.

I thought a few of the "designs" showed real creativity within a functional envelope: meaning its supposed to be able (in my mind anyway) to be manufacturable and employable as a functioning radiator. I understand its art, but many of the pictured entries were only art.

On the other hand, who am I to judge art? Many highly praised works in the art world don't do a thing for me, so I am aware that I just "don't get it", since whatever "it" is, eludes me.

I believe that form follows function, not the other way around.

To me a simple, clean, yet in all respects functional design that pleases the eye is the ultimate goal, and I think a radiator should be as inconspicuous as possible. I wouldn't have "Archibald" (the winner) in my house but I guess that's why I'm an engineer instead of an industrial designer.
