EPA Orders BP to Use Less Toxic Oil Dispersant

Posted May 21, 2010 8:26 AM

From Wired Top Stories:

The Environmental Protection Agency ordered British Petroleum to change the type of dispersant the company is using to keep oil from reaching American shores. The EPA gave the company 72 hours to switch to a less toxic chemical for use in breaking up oil slicks. Persistent questions about the toxicity of Corexit 9500 have plagued BP over the last several weeks. But the company continued to purchase and use the chemical.

Typical dangerous interference by clueless politicians/bureaucrats trying to second-guess the experts. What are the options, and how much is available? How much time is going to be wasted testing the untried recommendations before they gain approval? Which politician happens to own the company selling the alternative?

I trust BP far more than I trust the government- mostly because the losses that BP faces increase exponentially the longer this goes on. They have a strong motivation to bring this to a close soon. On the other hand, there are those in government that would dearly love to find a "sustainable disaster" (to borrow a term from another thread) from which they can line their pockets for years to come...

"...trying to second-guess the experts."

That would be the same BP experts who actually caused this mess in the first place right?

"I trust BP far more than I trust the government- mostly because the losses that BP faces increase exponentially the longer this goes on. They have a strong motivation to bring this to a close soon."

And that strong motivation - which is presumably largely financial - couldn't possibly motivate them to engage in unsafe practices. It's not like similar motivations led to the spill and...oh...wait. Hmmmm.

I think this is political or at least seen as a political winfall. The current administration has more to gain by BP's failure than BP's success.

yes, they are being asked to use a less effective dispersant so that there will be more oil washing to shore. that will cause more "environmental" damage so that the media will be able to have more of a field day bashing the oil companies.......it seems that the media is very disappointed that there has not been much damage......

some sarcasm was used in the writing of this post.......
