Meet the Moderator and Blogger: T1tan01

Posted June 27, 2010 5:01 PM by SavvyExacta

T1tan01 is studying Information Technology & Web Sciences and Management Information Systems at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He has been a Web Content Technologist at GlobalSpec for three years. Before working at GlobalSpec he has held various jobs ranging from a pharmaceutical technician to a ride operator at a local amusement park.

Why did you choose to moderate/blog?

I chose to blog because there are certain things I want to share with the community that I find interesting. I also like to share my viewpoints and see what others have to say. Even if only one person reads my blog and enjoys it, then I have done my job. The most important thing to remember when blogging is to blog about what YOU want, not what will get the most views. I think this mindset will be apparent if you see the views on any of my entries.

Moderating was important to me because CR4 is one of the only social sites I've seen that truly cares about preserving the integrity of the community. Other sites just let users post garbage that adds no value to the site. I wanted to contribute to this initiative so that our users can enjoy a really great place to learn and share

Blogging topics: How do you choose?

As mentioned before, the topic only has to meet two criteria. It has to be interesting to me and I have to feel it is worth sharing. Generally, I like to stick to computer and video game related topics.

Favorite part about CR4?

It has to be the unique community. CR4 is set apart from the rest because of the knowledge of the user base. It is impossible not to learn something any time you visit CR4. This cannot be said for the majority of similar sites on the web.

Motto/Advice you live by?

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

What are your hobbies?

My hobbies are anything involving sports - from following to playing. And that is all sports. I just have a fascination and love for competition. I am also a video game enthusiast from PC to PS3. I love video games because they are a great source of entertainment and I have inherent gaming ability.

Favorite website & why?

ESPN.com. After I watch SportsCenter at least two times in the morning I can read entries from all of my favorite analysts throughout the day as well as keep up on current scores. Part of me wishes CR4 would implement a "sports" section. Show the support on this entry and hopefully we can make it happen.

What would you say is the most interesting thing about you?

The most interesting thing I would say are just my eclectic interests.

One word that best describes you?

Driven

Hi T1tan01,

It's good to know a little bit about what interests you.

What I would suggest is you find yourself an experienced engineer mentor you in this moderating of engineers role.

However some advice in the meantime is; the most horrific sacrilege, far above any religion or politic, or 'morals' - is 'over unity'.

To come on CR4 speaking this Sin would be a a bit like someone insistently asserting to you that Assassin's Creed is identical to Space Invaders in programming and skill-sets and functionality.

You can see this will lead to an argument?

The point being; to moderate you need the knowledge to see it coming and step in at the moment it ceases to be 'just another idiot folk are playing with'.

Much recent moderation has lacked this 'for-skill' - so only deletes the outcomes.

Equally many times the people still wanting to 'play' - don't care about a naughty word, but are more interested in 'what happens next'.

Or much like a carnival ride operator has heard all the 'naughty words' and survived, the awareness of what will cause an outburst is more useful than "excuse me Sir - kindly moderate your language" in the middle of a fight that an ounce of 'knowledge' could have circumvented.

So you may find 'strident objection', even 'use of the "Report" button, on/to a post, at times perplexing, as no 'obvious rule infringement' (see FAQ's) is apparent.

This is when you go to your mentor and ask why are this posters utterances being so stridently reacted to?

And the answer will be "because the poster is sodomising The Laws of Our Deity".

Obviously this advice applies to all the moderating team who are not deeply steeped in our knowledge or Laws - Find a mentor who is.

Truth is most of them will be old (so near death in your view) - so won't mind enlightening a youngster - so long as 'moderation' becomes suited to an engineering forum.

As opposed to 'prissy, anal, misdirected, uninformed and late'.
