New Text Formatting Toolbar

Pathfinder Tags: CR4 Tutorial

Introducing our new text editor! The CR4 toolbar for writing a new post has a new look. Most of the functionality you are used to is still available. This new toolbar should work well across most browsers.

First, there are a couple of notable differences:

  • No custom right click menu. The CR4 custom right click menu is gone.
  • No spell check. The spell check functionality is gone. Most browsers and devices have this built in. If yours doesn't and you're prone to errors, you can always type your text into a program like Word, run that program's spell checker, and then copy and paste the text into CR4.

Read on for an overview of what the buttons mean. Note that you can also hover your mouse over each button, if you're accessing CR4 on a desktop, and you'll be able to read a description of each button.

B - Bold text

I - Italicize text

U - Underline text

S - Strikethrough

Insert a hyperlink

Remove a hyperlink

Insert an image (can be hosted elsewhere or uploaded from your computer)

Insert a video (must be hosted elsewhere, like on YouTube)

  • Insert a bulleted list
  1. Insert a numbered list

Decrease indent of bullets

Increase indent of bullets

Apply subscript

Apply superscript

Insert a symbol (choose from the menu)

Insert an emoticon (choose from a group of CR4 classics)

Clear formatting of text you may have pasted in from another source

You can paste by using the keyboard shortcut CTRL + V. On a phone, you can paste by tapping and holding until the paste option shows up.

The print is a bit small - if it's too small for you, you can zoom in on the page to make it larger. Luckily the text on the rest of the site is displaying in the same size!

The "p" just shows what type of formatting you're applying. You can ignore it.

This is IE-11 behind my company's firewall. I see the tool bar when I open CR4 using FireFox, so I'm not completely dead in the water . . .

Someone has sent you a private message for more information about the problem with Internet Explorer. Glad you're able to use it in Firefox, though!

I also use E11 behind a company firewall (wonder if it's the same one...?) if you need another guinea pig. I generally use FF24 as CR4 runs better there...

If there's anyone else who's using IE11 and can reproduce the issue that Brave Sir Robin has, please let me know!

I like being able to insert links to videos. I used to use the spellchecker all the time, but I believe Chrome still does that, so OK.

Only one thing...my old eyes can barely make out what I am typing, but it's normal size in the preview window. Is there a way to adjust that, or do I need to "Ctrl +" the browser to expand everything?

I thought everyone would love the video option! It's something everyone has been asking for for a long time.

You'll need to use CTRL+ for now. I agree; the text is a bit small.

Looks OK, nice new features. If you don't have spellcheck, grammarly works well. I have it installed in Chrome, the paid version gives grammar checking but the one does a good job of spellchecking with suggestions when you hover over a word that has been flagged up.

No custom right click menu. The CR4 custom right click menu is gone. HOORAY for that!

Just testing. Bold italic underscore strikethrough subscript superscript

insert character: ∞ = infinity (for those that don't know)

emoticon ........... Can we have one with a RED face please - for embarrassment

---------------------------------------

Copy above and paste below:

10/10 for that improvement.

Re: New Text Formatting Toolbar

I learned something interesting when copying and pasting cells from Excel spreadsheets into edit text buffer.

The editor creates an "image" or "object" box around these cells, with sub boxes around them, and it can grow (be resized). The only way to delete these if you need to is highlight the code in the lower left corner of text editor, then hit delete (assuming all these boxes are selected). I did not experiment with trying to delete a single sub-box.

That's weird, I don't recall actually posting an Emoticon. Where did that come from?

If it is 'red' it is difficult to see - but that could my aging eyesight letting me down.
