Posted June 02, 2010 3:07 PM

From Top Cultured:

This list is morbidly interesting. Here's a brief list of 10 inventors killed by their own inventions. Do you know of any more...?

I did hear of a scientist who thought he could breath fire using hydrogen. Not a pleasant way to die I think.

My High School shop teacher, inventor of "virtual reality" by cutting off his thumb while demonstrating radial saw safety, died of humiliation......

From the list, it looks like DIY flying machines are a bad thing...

Those fellows did have some pretty bad luck and short flights. İ guess they had the down part figured out but the level and upward movements were difficult!

They should have consulted with the Wright brothers first.

That's what I was noticing. 5 out of the 10 being all losses in the game of man vs. gravity.

Indeed, the first guy "A Muslim Kazakh Turkic scholar from Farab he concocted a flying machine that used two wooden wings and a rope" was unclear on the yet-to-be-established concept of covering the wings with some sort of light weight fabric instead of a rope.

Definitely the Icarus syndrome repeats itself.

I was pleased to see Midgely included in the list. Did you know he was the inventor of CFC refrigerants, which went on to create the stratospheric ozone hole. Also involved in promoting lead as an additive to gasoline. The man was not particularly lucky in his inventions (to say nothing of the rest of us).

This one may have succeeded. Although Steve Fossett died in a plane, it could have been one of his balloons. I'm not sure either of these were inventions, though.
