Move Over Doctor Dolittle - Here Comes the iPad

Posted June 03, 2010 9:29 AM

From Newlaunches.com:

Who could have imagined that the iPad would be the bridge between human and animal communications? In the few weeks since the iPad was launched, Apple seem to have catalysed something that animal scientists the world over have aspired to achieve for years. Researchers at Speak Dolphin, Dolphin Discovery's swim facility in Puerto Aventuras, Mexico are using the iPad and a symbol-based communication interface of their design to communicate with Merlin the bottlenose dolphin.

That would be a way of demonstarting their intelligence; but dolphins are not the only animals who posses the brains to interact with their surroundings.

Actually, that is not a virtue exclusive to "superior" animals, and hi-tech toys are not required either; every once on a while, we see demonstrations of lower forms of wildlife figuring out stuff (even human related stuff), untying knots, opening jars, hammering with watever is on hand etc.

Let me tell you about a little crab I saw in a well besides my house:

This clever guy grabbed a little stick that was floating, then located himself about 4" beneath the water surface, waited 'till the water was on calm and started touching the water surface with the stick; concentric waves were created, and somehow they called the attention of many little fish from around.

They avidly gathered around the center point of the waves, and when there were a few dozens, the naughty crab released the stick and begun snaping his clamp in all directions among the fish 'till he captured one !

I wish I had a camcorder that day, but at least I was convinced that intelligence seems to be not of the sole domain of mammals; who knows what kind of critters do their tricks and no one has witnessed it yet.
