First Humans: Time of Origin Pinned Down

Posted February 23, 2007 2:05 PM

From LiveScience.com:

The lineages of humans and chimpanzees, our closest relatives, diverged from one another about 4.1 million years ago, according to a new estimate that is said to be far more precise than previous ranges for this critical evolutionary moment. Asger Hobolth of North Carolina State University and his colleagues arrived at the estimate of "the time we became human," or the time in the past when descendents of the human-chimp ancestor split into human and chimp, by statistically comparing DNA from four regions of the human, chimp and gorilla genomes.

Interesting, but it there are still many things to be discovered and learned, so I don't expect that the divergence date will be pinned down to most scientists satisfaction for some time yet since the fossil and DNA "records" are just too sparsely populated.

Variations from the assumed rate of DNA change/mutation, convergent evolution ("chimp" ancestors could have started out as bipedal and then become knuckle-walkers again at a later time to fill their environmental niche), interbreeding at possible points, etc, can all cloud the issue. But every new finding is a step forward on average toward ever increasing knowledge. Evolution is a lot more like a gnarly, twisted tree than anything like a straight line.

My understanding is that 'we' and chimps descended from a common ancestor, rather then diverged from each other. Is that incorrect?
