Is This News You Can Use?

Posted July 03, 2010 8:03 AM

For a break from Gulf of Mexico news, we turn to the top 10 stupid environmental stories recently compiled by Environmental Science & Technologies. The ability of Icelandic volcanic ash to ground European air traffic, Michigan blaming Illinois for the Asian carp invasion of the Great Lakes, and "Climategate" made the list. The crowning news story revealed that atrazine, a herbicide still used in the U.S., turns male frogs into females. Do you consider these newsworthy or irrelevant stories? What can you add to the list?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Environmental Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Environmental Technology today.

I can't follow the first link, (http://pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/es101306d?cookieSet=1), although everything is set in my browser appropriately. Is it possible that the file is not accessible without an account and login? Could you post is where we can get to it?

Thanks

Good link, thank you.

Terrible "Science", but good link. We won't hold you responsible for the science. And you are exonerated, thanks. But not Oxford, or Leeds, or all the idiots here in the US who've decided that "Science in the Public Interest" is a misnomer for "Science in the Political Interest" (which is another term for "Gullible Americans Gored by Al", but that's our "excuse". What's the excuse for the rest of the world?).

Boy, bad to stupid science doesn't begin to cover it, does it?

Ha, ha -- "Climategate" is a stupid story! No, really, ha, ha. There's NOTHING there. No, no. Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain! I am the Great and Powerful OZ err, climate researcher. Oxburgh has completely whitewashed no, no I mean exonerated the folks at Hadley. Ha, ha. Really, no story here; just move along.

I've seen pigeons that do a better job of "whitewashing", so I'm with you. And hopefully, like the job the pigeons do, we'll ALL see through this sooner, rather than later.

I think the problem lies with the media in general. The major outlets have NOT been doing a very good job at keeping us informed. Most significantly, they seem to be avoiding doing any of their own fact-checking work, and most of the majors seem to simply avoid certain topics. Though they continue to fulfill the traditional role of providing a conduit for press releases, we had hoped for better.

Thus, if I want to know the truth about something, or do some critical thinking on a topic, news sources are not the ones I use. Fortunately, there are still a few other ways to get data that at least possibly is more reliable. We should guard them well! The human right of free speech plays an important role here.
