Automotive X Prize Builds Momentum

Posted February 26, 2007 4:56 PM

From PopularMechanics.com - Blogs: Automotive News:

We spent some time at the competition's headquarters in Pasadena, Calif., to find out more about the possibly $20-million purse for building a production-capable vehicle that can deliver more than 100 mpg. The Automotive X Prize comes from the same folks who developed the Ansari X Prize. This time the purse may well be double that of the $10-million space prize payout. The challenge? To build a viable, production-capable vehicle that can deliver in excess of 100 mpg or its equivalent fuel economy. "These cars must be production viable in quantities of 10,000 or more as judged by industry experts," says Goodstein. "We want to prevent the million-dollar fuel-cell car from entering, as well as the technically competent but ugly 'bubble car.'"

The world record for non production is around 5000 mpg (Ave speed 15mph) I'm sure if they wanted to they could do it.

http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/articles/t-the-insight-marathon-2006-world-record-22544-miles-on-one-tank-of-fuel-2783.html Hybrids as usual neglecting any charging.

http://home.clara.net/peterfrost/tryaneii.html Not bad a little work could make it, maybe ugly or a little nostalgic.

Then there is the existing world record that I cannot find except in the 1995 Guinness World Record Book of a daihatsu charde 1.1 Diesel that did around 110mpg.

But I am sure they will throw up as many rules and conditions as they can even if it meets 10'000 production units.

When I visited the folks at Rocky Mountain Institute in 2002, they told me that they had the engineering design for a vehicle which would get 173 miles per gallon of gasoline (petrol). They were offering the design to anyone who wanted to license it, but so far had no takers! Ask them at rmi.org. They're pretty good people. --jmm
