The Little 57-mpg Engine That Could

Posted July 12, 2010 11:24 AM

From Wired Top Stories:

Ever-tighter fuel economy and emissions regs, not to mention changing consumer tastes, have automakers doing more with less. We're seeing a resurgence in compacts and subcompacts, and automakers are putting smaller, more efficient engines in many models. But Fiat is taking it to a whole 'nother level by putting a tiny two-cylinder engine in the adorable 500.

That's nothing, I knew someone that had an '61 Fiat, that he got it to go 400 mpg. It was all electric and took one gallon of water for the batteries. Top speed was 45 mph and a range of 150 miles before charging the batteries, which took eight hours.

Nice...
I read the article, but was slighty nonplussed by this line...
" Wind the little engine that could up and it sounds like a motorcycle "
Hmmm indeed, I s'pose we know what they mean.

I like it. This is the direction auto companies should be going in their quets for better fuel usage. Tiny little turbocharged motors paired with short gearing.

Reminds me of a Seat that a friend of mine bought as a "deployment car" in Spain for $500. Sounded like a motorcycle. Rode OK but when we came to a long hill, I would have to get out and run alongside pushing. We drove all over southern Sapin in it though. As I understood it Seat was an old Fiat factory that Spain had bought to produce cars in Spain. Wonder if they are still around... Think I will google them.

The first thing I would do would be to stuff a Hyabusa engine into it. Some better rubber to take the horsepower and away we go.

Yeah, adorable is how one sells cars to women. No offense ladies, but no guy in his right mind purchases an adorable car.

A Friend of mine had one of those little Fiats where the steering wheel stayed on the door/hatch when you opened it. It was so slow that we called it the "time machine".

His dog buried it in the backyard.
