Flexible CIGS Solar Cells Achieve New Efficiency Record

Posted July 16, 2010 8:11 AM

Swiss researchers have injected new hope into the race towards better renewable energy technology by demonstrating a new record efficiency of 17.6 % for copper-indium-gallium-diselenide (CIGS) solar cells on a polymer film. The solar cell structure was produced using a low-temperature process, which can be adapted for roll-to-roll manufacturing. When will these solar cells be ready to replace the traditional silicon solar cells? What additional technology developments are necessary for these flexible thin film CIGS solar panels to become commercially viable and economically profitable?

IMO they will have to create a comparable life span and find a solution for fast aging and UV influences. This will be the date for when.
