The Dutch have developed a robust fleet of oil spill response vessels that do an effective job of cleaning up in the aftermath of an emergency. However, their technology doesn't perfectly purify the water; it allows a small percent of the oil to remain. For this reason, it doesn't meet the U.S. specifications, and both BP and the U.S. government have turned them away from the unfolding tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico. Should the government relax its standards for the sake of getting the job done?
