Laying the Grid for the Electric Car

Posted July 30, 2010 7:59 AM

From CNET News.com:

This week GM revealed the price of its Chevy Volt electric car as the automaker looks to draw buyers looking for a more eco-friendly mode of transportation. With just a 40-mile range on a charge from an electric power source for the Volt, and about 100 miles for the electric Nissan Leaf, however, drivers will need to always be on the lookout for their next sip of juice.

"...the automaker looks to draw buyers looking for a more eco-friendly mode of transportation."

I am excited to see this car (and its competitors) hit the street. It lays the groundwork for more and better versions of the electric car. However, at $41,000 it will be purchased more as a rich man's/women's novelty than a cheap eco-friendly vehicle.

"...however, drivers will need to always be on the lookout for their next sip of juice."

Given the long recharge time, recharging will be a very well planned event, not spontaneous. You simply will not be driving down the road and see a sign with a wall socket icon and say, "Hey, kids, let's stop here for four hours."

Several companies are trying to promote the EV charging stations as the greatest thing to come along for years - mainly in an effort to create a interest where they can have a IPO and get rich.

Charging will be almost all done at home or at work - not in between as has been pointed out.

Huh? 40 miles between charges?

The electric cars back in the early 1980's where going further than that and cost far less than the 1980's equivalent to todays price tag of $41,000.

Hell there are electric forklifts in big warehouses that put on more than 40 miles between charges. They may go 1/10 the speed but they carry ten times the mass and lift it countless times a day as well.

Congrats again GM, You took 30 year old tech and cut the range in half while tripling the cost at the same time.

But hey at least you probably put 6 cup holders in it and five power ports for all the drinks and electronic crap that will keep the driver distracted from realizing what a under ranged over priced piece of crap they have.

The Volt can only go 40 miles? What about the 300+ mile range provided by the gas engine that generates supplemental electricity?
