Converting Gas-Guzzlers into Hybrids

Posted August 13, 2010 8:02 AM

From Technology Review RSS Feeds:

A handful of companies hope to carve a new niche by converting fleets of gas- or diesel-powered trucks, vans, and cars into hybrids and plug-in hybrids--and they're attracting millions of dollars of funding to do it. In some cases, they say, the conversions could pay for themselves in fuel and maintenance savings in just a few years.

$26,500 to get a 10 - 30 % mileage gain on a Ford F150?

For a few hours of online research and a fair days tinkering and you can get rid of most of the emissions system and improve a few factory parts on the same pickup and not spend much over $100 and still get the 10 - 30% mileage increase!

I have done it to all of my vehicles and I guarantee its way cheaper and easier than the hybrid conversion!

It seems pretty counter productive to me, at least within the scope of this article, to remove most of the emissions system. The point of a hybrid system is to increase efficiency and reduce fuel consumption and emissions, not pour more pollutants into the atmosphere...
