Can You Cope With Advanced Materials?

Posted August 22, 2010 8:00 AM

Metals developers are fighting back against the advance of composites with some pretty clever looking new products. Not just aluminum and titanium, but also more exotic materials like magnesium, lithium, and even silver are getting into the mix. That's great, but what does it mean for the outfits that will cut the shapes and drill the holes in these new alloys? Are new formulations of metals going to require new types of machining processes and much enhanced skills or do job shops already possess what it will take to deal with the advent of these new materials?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Machine Tools & Metal Working, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Machine Tools & Metal Working today.

The apprehensions that new metal will throw new manufacturing challenges, is not with out foundation.

Even material like Titanium 6Al4V, which is around for quite a while now, can be very challenging. Simple saw cutting can be excruciating if done with out experience. So is the case while machining or drilling. Hot forming of titanium alloy and tools required for the same require fairly good knowledge of Titanium metallurgy and various dos and don'ts.

Aluminum Lithium alloys probably with best weight/strength ratio is equally tough to manufacture. Heat treatment with in tight band of temperature and need for post cold working etc can indeed a night mare.

Surely making best use of unforgiving advanced metals will demand good knowledge, skill and utmost attention. There will be nothing like simple drilling cutting or machining.

This was long due. Every thing which gets birth eventually die and product and materials are not amune to this.

We gave birth to camera with negative and positive and killed it with digital camera.

We gave birth to CRT based TV killed this flat pannel and now we are going to kill flat panel with holographic TV.

We developed transmission line and made power captive. Current trend is to democatize the power. We did limited way with solar and will have fully developed with SOFC based power system and the technology will based on generating power at user site and not to make us captive and dictatorship of transmison tower and power line which is 100s of miles from user point.

I was sick of carrying brief case of wire to charge my mobile phone and some time I have to drop call because I was out of luck at airport with power outlet. Left my job and started workining with personnel power and now I can talk 24/7 and made myself independent of country I am in.

Same willhappen tocomputer within few years laptop computer will be dead and it will lay down new product call wireless system in our pocket. This will doevery thing whihc is currently done by laptop and more.

To do all these we needed new materials. People have come up with knife (yettria stablized zirconia) which does not need sharpning and developed drinking water glass which can be dropped from 30th floor on road and can pick up and enjoy drinking water out of the glass without a sign of crack.

Material is getting stronger and closer to diamond in terms of hardness. We may come to point we will need to redefine hardness number.

Materials stayed backward over equipment and we started pushing in USA and now we are developing equipment to amke these new material usable and this is natural cycle created by God which is to get birth grow strong and then get old and die. This is true for human being and is true for materials and product.

It is good idea to have your name also if you want to discuss. This site is for Technology and sharing information and thoughts and not to hide name and say funny.

Know I am not in dream and fuzzy world. I am in materials world which will make our life little easier than what we are in.

In our life time we will have Nano based cancerdrug. I was my self involved in flat panel development and materials of Flat panel.

This is not talk in the air but is real world senario. We will make sure old technology die and new get birth to make our life lilltle more enjoyable.

I am sure you have done this also may be small contribution to grow our society where our parent left. This is progress and this is call inovation. I am involved from day one on solar and people laughed but at that time I had opinon I will make this power democratic like I live in USA and country which is based on democratic value and I think I can say I had little sucess but making Mobile phone independent of me and you searching power point to charge our phone will be better and this is what democracy is make it good for all and not for few privilage one

In any steel mill making higher qualities of steel there will be a department dedicated to developing steels to the customers requirements. The department is normally reactive and not proactive but it is an extremely important department.
